Measurements of R for deuterium, He, Al, Fe and Au were made at Q2 = 5 (GeV/c)2 and x = 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7. An indication of a possible A-dependence of R has been found which would result in large differences among sigma/sup A//sigma/sup d/, F2/sup A//F2/sup d/ and F1/sup A//F1/sup d/. 7 references, 4 figures.

Significant differences in the inelastic structure functions of Fe, Al, and deuterium nuclei have recently been observed in muon and electron scattering experiments. This has been interpreted as a distortion of the quark momentum distributions in bound nucleons. To study the A-dependence of this effect, we have measured differential cross sections for the inelastic scattering of electrons from deuterium, He, Be, C, Al, Ca, Fe, Ag, and Au over a large kinematic range (x values between 0.09 and 0.9 and Q2 values of 2, 5, 10, and 15 (GeV/c)2). The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) provided electrons with incident energies (E) ranging from 8 to 24.5 GeV. The SLAC 8-GeV/c spectrometer was used at 23 settings to detect electrons with energies (E') from 3.1 to 8.4 GeV scattered at angles [theta] between 11 and 23°.

The deep inelastic electron scattering cross sections per nucleon sigma/sub A/ for d, He, Be, C, Al, Ca, Fe, Ag, and Au were measured in the kinematic range 0.09 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.9 and 2 less than or equal to Q2 less than or equal to 15 (GEV/c)2 using electrons with energies ranging from 8 to 24.5 GeV. The ratio sigma/sub A//sigma/sub d/ is consistent with unity in the range 0.1
