Excerpt from Play in Education And not only do we call the child's dearest interests by a name implying that they are of negligible importance, but we heighten the misunderstanding by (very properly) calling the same identical interests when they appear in grown people by a variety of high-sounding names, such as work, art, science, patriotism, idealism, genius, that we never think of applying to children's play. For the thing itself, even as it appears in grown people, we have no word, which if we had we might extend to the case of children and so help ourselves to an understanding of their lives. Excerpt from Education by Plays and Games The study of which this book is a revision was begun at Clark University and published in the Pedagogical Seminary in 1894. Since then the writer has been in very intimate and almost constant touch with children. His interest in child play, awakened years ago and kept active by observation and personal contact with children in clubs, play schools, school playgrounds, and the home circle, has been encouraged by numberless requests from teachers for the little study pub lished ten years ago. Largely in response to these requests this revision has been undertaken. It is earnestly hoped that the book may help promote a wider and higher appreciation of play and of its value in education, and add somewhat to the sum of child happiness in the world. The discussion of the meaning of play, of the relation of play and work, and of the history and application of play to education is by no means full. It can scarcely do more than give the point of view. The discussion of the periods of childhood is a bare summary, but is sufficient, it is hoped, to make clear their relation to the Course of Plays and Games. Of the course itself it may be admitted that it is perhaps too condensed. The whole study is valuable, if at all, mainly for its suggestiveness. Excerpt from Play and Recreation, for the Open Country I was led to undertake the preparation of this book by a suggestion that came to me from Dr. A. E. Winship of the New England Journal of Education while I was lecturing and conducting some play demonstrations at the normal school at Kearney, Nebraska. The suggestions here made have since been tried at many normal schools and rural teachers' institutes. I am much indebted to the following associations and persons for their kindness in loaning pictures for the book: The Playground and Recreation Association of America; the Boy Scouts of America; the Camp Fire Girls; Mr. O. H. Benson of the United States Department of Agriculture; The Agricultural College, Stillwater, Oklahoma; Miss Nina B. Lamkin; Young Women's Christian Association, St. Louis, Missouri; Mr. W. Francis Hyde, Worcester, Massachusetts; Reverend Frederick Hollister, North Stonington, Connecticut; Mr. John Staples, Houston, Texas; and President John Kirk of the Normal School, Kirksville, Missouri. . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Excerpt from Child Life and the Curriculum Bobby was one of my foremost pupils in a village high school. He was fourteen years old but small in stature. At times his face was radiant with boyish joy; at other times his face bore the serious demeanor of a judge. Bobby was one of the very first to reach the playground at recess time. After recess he was among the first to open his books for study. He played with those younger than himself because the younger ones played the more. In the classroom he worked with those older than himself because with these his good mind had more companionship. He was punctual, regular, and reliable in both work and play. But before the close of the year a marked change took place in Bobby. He played less and studied less. Something was wrong with the boy - or with the school. As his teacher, I had come directly from a classical college. I required all my students to take Latin and mathematics. English grammar and history also were emphasized. Hard work and vigorous drill characterized my school policy. I wondered what caused the change in Bobby. One day three of my grade teachers reported to me that Fred, known in the school and in the town as "the worst boy in school," had been asked by Bobby to join his gang. He declined, saying that that gang was too bad for him. My Bobby's gang too bad for Fred? Thus through Fred it was discovered that Bobby was the leader of a gang which had as one of its purposes: How to make swearing easy. These boys held regular and irregular meetings in a little covered bridge near the pastor's house. There they exercised in their self-chosen art. Explanation of the changed attitude of my favorite student was now clear. The usual play at recess had not provided the needed activity. Excerpt from Primary Education As I said before, a child's life is largely made up of action, and his birthright is free motor-activity. It is believed that games furnish a better field for the development of child-nature than any other exercise ever employed in a school course. By means of them the power to think quickly, to judge, to act, as well as to learn politeness and self-restraint, can be unconsciously acquired. That which spontaneously holds the child's attention will be the line of least resistance; therefore his play interests should be correlated with the school work.
