In a convenient, single-source reference, this book examines plant growth substances and their relationship to a wide range of physiological processes, ranging from seed germination through the death of the plant. If offers a clear illustration of the pragmatic uses of plant substances in agriculture and demonstrates how basic laboratory research has translated into increased production and profit for the grower. This work begins by building a solid foundation in the subject, which contains historical aspects and fundamental concepts, and provides a methodology for extraction, purification, and quantification of plant growth substances. This forms the basis for understanding the ensuing chapters that explore the many processes involving plant growth substances, including: * seed germination * seedling growth * rooting * dormancy * juvenility * maturity * senescence * flowering * abscission * fruit set * fruit growth * fruit development * premature drop * ripening * promotion of fruit drop * tuberization * photsynthesis * weed control. Providing a detailed examination of plant growth substances and their relationships to specific physiological plant processes, Plant Growth Substances gives students, researchers, and professionals a much needed reference.

I feel immense pleasure in presenting this book to the students. The field of plant physiology includes the study of chemical and physiological processes within the plants. This book of plant physiology lucidly explains the operational mechanisms of plants with the help of illustrations. It focuses on the study of the internal activities of plants including molecular interactions of photosynthesis, photoperiodism, seed dormancy, plant hormones, plant stress and bioenergetics. The book with its compilations and update literature and its lucid presentation will be useful for students, teachers and others in the subject of plant physiology. I wish to express my gratitude to my teacher Prof. (Dr.) Vibha Khanna for her guidance and my colleagues. I am also grateful to my husband Dr. Hemant Kumar for his valuable support.

Demonstrates how advances in plant chemical biology can translate to field applications With contributions from a team of leading researchers and pioneers in the field, this book explains how chemical biology is used as a tool to enhance our understanding of plant biology. Readers are introduced to a variety of chemical biology studies that have provided novel insights into plant physiology and plant cellular processes. Moreover, they will discover that chemical biology not only leads to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of plant biology, but also the development of practical applications. For example, the authors discuss small molecules that can be used to identify targets of herbicides and develop new herbicides and plant growth regulators. The book begins with a historical perspective on plant chemical biology. Next, the authors introduce the chemical biology toolbox needed to perform successful studies, with chapters covering: Sources of small molecules Identification of new chemical tools by high-throughput screening (HTS) Use of chemical biology to study plant physiology Use of chemical biology to study plant cellular processes Target identification Translation of plant chemical biology from the lab to the field Based on the latest findings and extensively referenced, the book explores available compound collections, principles of assay design, and the use of new research tools for the development of new applications. Plant Chemical Biology is recommended for students and professionals in all facets of plant biology, including molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry, agriculture, horticulture, and agronomy. All readers will discover new approaches that can lead to the development of a healthier and more plentiful global food supply.

The Tenth International Conference on Plant Growth Substances was held July 22-26,1979 at the Wisconsin Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the joint sponsorship of The International Plant Growth Substances Association (IPGSA) and the Graduate School of the University. More than 500 persons, including 423 regis tered participants, attended the Conference. Financial support was generously provided by the organizations listed under Acknowledg ments. The Conference was planned and hosted by a Local Committee in response to a request from Professor Dennis Carr, Secretary of IPGSA, in 1976, that the Tenth Conference be held on this campus in 1979. To achieve comprehensive, systematic coverage of the subject and yet provide maximum opportunity for individual contributions by partici pants, reports were presented under ten topics, each with sessions of oral reports and poster demonstrations. Chairmen appointed by the Local Committee organized the material to be presented and arranged for a series of integrated, invited reports on each topic. They presided and led discussions at the sessions, and they also greatly assisted in the editing of the invited reports which are presented in full in these Pro ceedings. Unfortunately it was economically impractical to publish all reports, but the 244 submitted abstracts have been printed and dis tributed to participants.

Cytokinins are hormones involved in all aspects of plant growth and development and are essential for in vitro manipulation of plant cells and tissues. Much information has been gathered regarding the chemistry and biology of cytokinins, while recent studies have focused on the genetics and cytokinin-related genes. However, other than proceedings of symposia, no single volume on cytokinins has been written. This book is the first of its kind, homing in on the key subject areas of cytokinin-chemistry, biosynthesis, metabolism, activity, function, genetics, and analyses. These areas are comprehensively reviewed in individual chapters by experts currently active in the field. In addition, a personal history on the discovery of cytokinin is presented by Professor Folke Skoog. This volume summarizes previous findings and identifies future research directions.
