Little Matey is a make-believe legend about a cat who is adopted by Blackbeard the Pirate to catch the rats on his ship, and who ends up living on Ocracoke Island in North Carolina. It is illustrated by the author. The story is based on historical fact, although no one knows if Blackbeard actually had a cat, or if its name was Little Matey. It is told from the cat's perspective.
