Imaging systems work on an interplay of physics, electronics, and algorithms. Designing imaging systems by exploiting all these layers of abstraction can give rise to novel applications and interesting solutions to existing problems. In this thesis, I will explore this design philosophy in 2 problems; automatic calibration of cameras that can see around corners, high resolution optical measurement of ultrasound. I will utilize advanced electronics hardware like femtosecond lasers, and Single Photon Avalanche Photodiode(SPAD) detectors for the automatic calibration project and software tools meant for machine learning in Python. For optical ultrasound measurement, I will use relatively simple hardware like solid state lasers, bench top optics, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), and a synchronised global shutter CMOS camera. Both projects are aimed at solving practical problems in their respective areas. Automatic calibration aims to improve the fidelity of images by algorithmically fixing calibration errors after taking measurements in cameras which can see around the corners. The optical ultrasound project aims to take medical ultrasound images at a very low cost and high resolution by using ideas from optics, laser vibrometry, and signal processing.

Time-of-flight (TOF) cameras provide a depth value at each pixel, from which the 3D structure of the scene can be estimated. This new type of active sensor makes it possible to go beyond traditional 2D image processing, directly to depth-based and 3D scene processing. Many computer vision and graphics applications can benefit from TOF data, including 3D reconstruction, activity and gesture recognition, motion capture and face detection. It is already possible to use multiple TOF cameras, in order to increase the scene coverage, and to combine the depth data with images from several colour cameras. Mixed TOF and colour systems can be used for computational photography, including full 3D scene modelling, as well as for illumination and depth-of-field manipulations. The Department of Defense, through the Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives program, is currently in the process of constructing two full-scale pilot plants at the Pueblo Chemical Depot in Colorado and the Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky to destroy the last two remaining inventories of chemical weapons in the U.S. stockpile. These two storage sites together account for about 10 percent of the original U.S. chemical agent stockpile that is in the process of being destroyed in accordance with the international Chemical Weapons Convention treaty. Unlike their predecessors, these facilities will use neutralization technologies to destroy agents contained within rockets, projectiles, and mortar rounds, requiring the use of specially designed equipment. As part of its focus on safe operation of the planned facilities, the Program Manager for Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives asked the National Research Council (NRC) to conduct a study to offer guidance on the application of process safety metrics at the Pueblo Chemical Depot and Blue Grass Army Depot. Process safety is a disciplined framework for managing the integrity of operating systems, processes and personnel handling hazardous substances, and operations by applying good design principles, engineering, and operating practices.
