It is all but impossible to think of September 11th 2001 and not, at the same time, recall an image. The overwhelmingly visual coverage in the world's media pictured a spectacle of terror, from images of the collapsing towers, to injured victims and fatigued firefighters. In the days, weeks and months that followed, this vast collection of photographs continued to circulate relentlessly. This book investigates the psychological impact of those photographs on a stunned American audience. Drawing on trauma theory, this book asks whether the prolonged exposure of audience to photographs was cathartic or damaging. It explores how first the collective memory of the event was established in the American psyche and then argues that through repetitive use of the most powerful pictures, the culture industry created a dangerously simple 9/11 metanarrative. At the same time, people began to reclaim and use photography to process their own feelings, most significantly in 'communities' of photographic memorial websites. Such exercises were widely perceived as democratic and an aid to recovery. This book interrogates that assumption, providing a new understanding of how audiences see and process news photography in times of crisis.

September Mourning is a memorial picture book and portfolio of over fifty never before published photographs of the World Trade Center and September 11th memorials. The photos, most of which were taken from the vantage point of New Jersey, were shot by award-winning, New Jersey based photographer Dave Rossi, and are combined with details and reflections of the iconic buildings. The book begins with scenic images taken in the 1970s of the distant towers from West Orange, NJ. The pictorial continues with several award-winning images Dave shot over the years including a 1980 aerial photograph of the new Twin Towers before any of the other World Trade Center buildings were erected and the last photograph he took of the still-standing World Trade Center Towers in September 2001, from Hoboken, NJ. The book centers on a surreal two-page panoramic photograph of the downed buildings engulfed in smoke on September 11, 2001, which was shot from just across the Hudson River in Jersey City, NJ, and includes a timeline of the events of the morning leading up to the tragedy. September Mourning progresses through multiple photographs of the ?Tribute in Light? memorial light displays, the new One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) under construction and a cross section of memorials in New Jersey. Pictured memorials include a city memorial park in Westfield; county memorials in West Orange (Essex), Springfield / Mountainside (Union); and the New Jersey State September 11 Memorial ?Empty Sky? just across the Hudson River from Ground Zero in Jersey City, New Jersey. Through the memorials in this book a story is told of bravery, loss, and remembrance of September 11, 2001. A day that affects every American. September Mourning? will make a valued keepsake and historical rated ?G? artistic photo reference to pass on to future generations. It pays tribute to those who lost their lives, their families, and to the courageous Firefighters, Police Officers, EMTs, Civilians, and other Rescue Workers who worked so hard and laid down their lives not only doing their duty but also for the love of their fellow man.
