African American Catholics, though small in number and historically the targets of racial intolerance, are now the backbone of the church. The vast majority of African American Catholics do not perceive racial marginalization and intolerance in the church. African American Catholics are among the strongest religious identifiers in the church, while whites show a more fragile Catholic identity. The Catholic church may have finally overcome its racist past for the vast majority of African American Catholics, but serious concerns remain for white Catholics. Based on data from a national religion survey, this book explores religious attitudes from an African American Catholic perspective.

In the first part of the book he proves that the perseverance by which a man perseveres in Christ to the end is God’s gift; for that it is a mockery to ask of God that which is not believed to be given by God. Moreover, that in the Lord’s prayer scarcely anything is asked for but perseverance, according to the exposition of the martyr Cyprian, by which exposition the enemies to this grace were convicted before they were born. He teaches that the grace of perseverance is not given according to the merits of the receivers, but to some it is given by God’s mercy; to others it is not given, by His righteous judgment. Excerpt from Perseverance in the War, the Interest and Duty of the Nation: A Sermon, Preached in the Church of the First Parish, Lexington, Sunday, September 11, 1864 The words imply that it may happen, even in the plainest path of duty, that we find discouragement; that success is long deferred; that sufferings and sacrifices abound; and thus there comes temptation to faint and be weary. We are in this fiery trial now. The long, terrible path of war stretches wearily behind us, and we cannot yet see clear and certain change in the distance that stretches before us; but more of these terrible slaughters, of these exhausting expenditures, of these financial disturbances which add to the toils and privations of the poor, and make many a strong man stagger. It is no reproach to us that we feel weary, and are strongly tempted to desist, to fly from this present crowd of evils, though it be to others that we know may be worse. I do not think highly of the wisdom or the goodness of the man who speaks flippantly and indifferently of the continuance of the war. He either has no mind to understand, or no heart to feel, the most awful woes and calamities of his fellow-men. I do not despise or severely condemn those who from a genuine feeling of the horrors of this contest, are tempted to ask for its termination at any cost. I confess to feelings so sad, to sinkings of heart so hard to overcome, as to effectually bar me from looking down with self-complacent condemnation on any, because they cry out in sincere sorrow for the end of carnage. But because I have these feelings, and only by earnest and conscientious reflection, overcome them, in the plain, irresistible conviction that they are a sinful temptation, contrary to the teachings of reason, to the requirements of righteousness, and the will of God, I feel the more confident in urging the duty and necessity of persevering. This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. In times when men's hearts are failing them for fear, in a period when many voices are clamoring for a hearing, the esteemed G. C. Berkouwer aptly commences his penetrating study by drawing attention to the timeliness and relevance of the doctrine of perseverance. He writes, "There is something very strange about this doctrine, something which confronts us with the problem of permanence in a unique way, because we are so conscious of our own changeableness. Our lives are subject to numberless variations and fluctuations. In the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints do we not have merely a projection of human desires, a hope which flies in the face of life's realities? Does it not grasp after something that is denied us as changeable men?" Facing this paradoxical nature of his subject, Berkouwer shows that the perseverance of the saints is unbreakably connected with the assurance of faith and warns us against speaking of constancy without standing in faith. To separate the doctrine of perseverance from its living and existential relationship to the gospel, to Word and sacrament, to promise and demand, petrifies it into a mere play of concepts drained of all life. The thoroughness with which Berkouwer treats the history of the discussions affecting this important subject (from the days of Tertullian and Augustine, through the Reformers, Ritschl, and Schleiermacher, down to Edmund Schlink and Karl Barth) gives this book a special value to all students of theology.

What does it mean to be a Catholic in today's world? What distinguishes the modern Catholic from anyone else? At a time when the Vatican provokes hostility by its opposition to contraception, abortion and the use of condoms in fighting AIDS, how many Catholics share its views? And if they don't, how can they in good conscience stay in the Church? These are among the many questions that writer and broadcaster Peter Stanford is addressing here. There is a whole spectrum of response in this entertaining and enlightening collection. 'Fascinating... a surprisingly uplifting book.' Sunday Telegraph 'A hard-hitting book which criticizes as much as it praises... it should be read by anyone interested in the phenomenon of organized religion.' Spectator
