One-third of today’s generation of youth—those ages ten to twenty-four—live in fragile or conflicted countries and are susceptible to the sway of ideological narratives of violent extremism. Evidence suggests, however, that they also play active and valuable roles as agents of positive and constructive change. Youth from Kenya’s low-income communities can play an active and positive role in making their communities better through generating knowledge that contributes to local peacebuilding efforts.
Securitizing Youth offers new insights on young people’s engagement in a wide range of contexts related to the peace and security field. It presents empirical findings on the challenges and opportunities faced by young women and men in their efforts to build more peaceful, inclusive, and environmentally secure societies. The first, the Youth Council for Suicide Prevention, is a youth-led project designed to address the ineffective suicide prevention programs that currently exclude the voices of youth experiences. The second project, Stuck in the Cracks, is a collaboration to develop community connectedness in a low-income neighborhood.
