This Art Book with Foreword and annotated reproductions by Maria Tsaneva contains 135 selected drawings and paintings of François Boucher.François Boucher was a French artist, advocate of Rococo style, famous for his idyllic paintings on classical topics and allegories representing the pastoral life. He was the most celebrated decorative artist of the 18th century. He was admired by the François Lemoyne, whose apprentice Boucher became, but after few months he went to work for the engraver Jean-François Cars. Reflecting inspiration gained from the Watteau and Rubens, Boucher's early paintings celebrates the idyllic, portraying nature and landscape but his art typically depict scenes with a definitive style of eroticism, and his mythological scenes are passionate and intimately romantic. Marquise de Pompadour, the mistress of King Louis XV, was a great admirer of Boucher's, and had the painter under her protection. His name, along with that of his patron Madame de Pompadour, had become synonymous with the French Rococo style.

This first book in English to focus on Boucher for nearly twenty years is an invaluable contribution to the study of eighteenth-century art. Boucher has cried out for reassessment, and here, at last, his work is seen at its very best in numerous beautiful reproductions. Jo Hedley brings new insights into Boucher's art, explaining both his stylistic development and his cultural context; she also examines his legacy, both in a survey of the influence of his imagery in many media and in a deconstruction of the myth of his libidinous personality, based on his art, not his life. Boucher's artistic legacy is also analyzed, demonstrating how the mythology surrounding the painter's so-called libidinous private life have continued to undermine serious consideration of his ability. "Splendidly written and lavishly illustrated, Jo Hedley's book on Fran§ois Boucher is a pioneering publication . . . Hedley's book abounds in new information, fresh insights, and suggestive analysis."--Colin B. Bailey, The Burlington Magazine

A celebrated painter in 18th-century France who eventually became prémier peintre to Louis XV in 1765, François Boucher (1703 - 1770) was equally gifted as a draftsman. His best-known drawings exemplify the intimate and light-hearted style of rococo, which dominated much of the 18th century. He produced some 10,000 drawings during his career, often employing his wife and children as sitters. This outstanding book assembles new research on Boucher's drawings, examining his role in shaping the growing market for drawings in 18th-century France. It explores his development as a draftsman, his range of subjects and his innovations in the context of the greatest French draftsmen of his time.
