This report presents information dealing with the oxidation of nickel- and cobalt-base superalloys. All of the superalloys will oxidize at high temperatures when oxygen is present in the enveloping atmosphere. The rate of oxidation depends upon alloy composition, temperature, oxygen concentration, oxides formed, diffusion rates of the metals in both base metal and oxide, diffusion rate of oxygen in the oxide, solubility of oxygen in the matrix, and a host of other variables. The effects of oxidation can be beneficial or they can be harmful. The first section of this report deals with the fundamentals of the oxidation of Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys. Subsequent sections discuss general surface oxidation, intergranular oxidation, other subsurface oxidation, and the effect of stress on the rate of oxidation. Numerous specific alloys are mentioned in the report; as an aid to the reader, the appendix contains an alloy index of the alloys mentioned in the report along with the compositions of the alloys, and the pages on which mention of the alloys is made.

The United States imports over 90 percent of its cobalt, chromium, tantalum and columbium -- all key elements in high temperature nickel-base superalloys for aircraft gas turbine disks and airfoils. NASA, through joint government/industry/university teams, has undertaken a long-range research program (COSAM - Conservation of Strategic Aerospace Materials) aimed at reducing or eliminating these strategic elements by examining their basic roles in superalloys and identifying viable substitutes. This paper discusses research progress in understanding the effects of cobalt and some possible substitutes on microstructure, mechanical properties, and environmental resistance of turbine alloys. The book is concerned with understanding the fundamental mechanisms of high temperature alloy oxidation. It uses this understanding to develop methods of predicting oxidation rates and the way they change with temperature, gas chemistry and alloy composition. The focus is on designing (or selecting) alloy compositions which provide optimal resistance to attack by corrosive gases. . Emphasises quantitative calculations for predicting reaction rates and the effects of temperature, oxidant activities and alloy compositions. . Uses phase diagrams and diffusion paths to analyse and interpret scale structures and internal precipitation distributions . Provides a detailed examination of corrosion in industrial gases (water vapour effects, carburisation and metal dusting, sulphidation) . Text is well supported by numerous micrographs, phase diagrams and tabulations of relevant thermodynamic and kinetic data . Combines physical chemistry and materials science methodologies.
