Our Mutual Friend, written in the years 1864-65, is the last novel completed by Charles Dickens and is one of his most sophisticated works, combining savage satire with social analysis. It centres on, in the words of critic J. Hillis Miller (quoting from the character Bella Wilfer in the book), "money, money, money, and what money can make of life." In the opening chapters a body is found in the Thames and identified as that of John Harmon, a young man recently returned to London to receive his inheritance. Were he alive, his father's will would require him to marry Bella Wilfer, a beautiful, mercenary girl whom he had never met. Instead, the money passes to the working-class Boffins, and the effects spread into various corners of London society.

The Hound of the Baskervilles gripped readers when it was first serialised and has continued to hold its place in the popular imagination to this day. Could the sudden death of Sir Charles Baskerville have been caused by the gigantic ghostly hound that is said to have haunted his family for generations? Arch-rationalist Sherlock Holmes characteristically dismisses the theory as nonsense. And, immersed in another case, he sends Dr Watson to Devon to protect the Baskerville heir and observe the suspects at close hand. With its atmospheric setting on the ancient, wild moorland and its savage apparition, The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of the greatest crime novels ever written. Rationalism is pitted against the supernatural and good against evil as Sherlock Holmes sets out to defeat a foe almost his equal.

John Harmon was the son and heir of a wealthy dust contractor. Inheriting his father's wealth was contingent only upon behaving himself and arriving at the opportune time to marry the young and lovely, Bella Wilfer. Away from England he receives terrible news, his father is dead. John made to rush home but on his route home he disappears, and many consider him to be a drowned body found nearby, dead and gone as well. The fortune passes to an elderly and loyal ex retainer of the family and he sets up to live quietly, but all was not destined to last. Charles Dickens' wrote 'Our Mutual Friend' last of all his novels after thirteen previous novels in his prolific career. Unappreciated at the time, it has come to be regarded as one of the best of Dickens' life. His similes hum with life and his characters are peculiar in a way that makes them somehow more real. Unlike hearing from a narrator, we wait with the characters to hear the next development on the grapevine. The energy and desire to express something meaningful about our shared human experience came through in every installment as it came out. With a new illustrator and a new way of publishing, more accessible to the masses, the story focuses on the problems that come with the greed and moral decadence that wealth can bring. A controversial message in a society which viewed wealth as just and the unfortunates of the world as a natural reality.
