Operational Transconductance Amplifiers (OTA) and sinusoidal oscillators are the subject of this thesis. OTAs are key elements of most analog subsystems, particularly in switched capacitor filters, and the performance of many systems is strongly influenced by the amplifier performance. Positive feedback is avoided in operational amplifiers for stability reasons. In this thesis we will discuss controlled positive feedback amplifiers. This type of positive feedback provides additional amplification of the input stage by effectively increasing the driver device transconductance [Ohri,1979]. The first three chapters are devoted to the discussion of MOS OTAs.In the first chapter the configuration of the amplifier is sketched. In chapter two, the results of the analysis of ( 1) basic OT A, (2) proposed additional stages and (3) transfer functions pertaining to(1) and (2) with compensation mechanisms are presented. In chapter three, the performance characteristics of the amplifier and other configurations of OTAs are described. Starting with chapter four, analog functional blocks other than amplifiers are considered. These include signal generators, gain control circuits and frequency tuning circuits. The emphasis is given to RC sinusoidal signal manipulation. In chapter four the class of RC oscillators that are suitable for precise control of amplitude and frequency are identified. Chapter five principally deals with an oscillator that uses descrete devices instead of integrated chips. This permits total freedom in the topology and also in the choice of battery voltage for operation. Chapter six gives an introduction to amplitude control and stabilization and leads to the discussion of the amplitude control system used in the oscillator of chapter five. Electronic tuning is explained in chapter seven with the help of the design of an oscillator that is composed of LF356 operational amplifiers and ICL8013C analog multipliers. This is an example of electronic tuning in signal generators using 1 small scale integrated circuits. Chapter eight portrays the findings of research done by the author in the area of analog electronics focusing mainly on the results obtained from the study of positive feedback in OTAs and with the authors experiences in monolithic realization of circuits in MOS foundries.

Implantable sensing, whether used for transient or long-term monitoring of in vivo physiological, bio-electrical, bio-chemical and metabolic changes, is a rapidly advancing field of research and development. Underpinned by increasingly small, smart and energy efficient designs, they become an integral part of surgical prostheses or implants for both acute and chronic conditions, supporting optimised, context aware sensing, feedback, or stimulation with due consideration of system level impact. From sensor design, fabrication, on-node processing with application specific integrated circuits, to power optimisation, wireless data paths and security, this book provides a detailed explanation of both the theories and practical considerations of developing novel implantable sensors. Other topics covered by the book include sensor embodiment and flexible electronics, implantable optical sensors and power harvesting. Implantable Sensors and Systems – from Theory to Practice is an important reference for those working in the field of medical devices. The structure of the book is carefully prepared so that it can also be used as an introductory reference for those about to enter into this exciting research and developing field.
