Excerpt from Novels and Tales of Charles Dickens, (Boz.), Vol. 3 of 3: Containing Nicholas Nickleby, and Martin Chuzzlewit While the Author cannot but feel the full force of the compliment thus conveyed to him, he ventures to suggest that these contentions ma arise from the fact that Mr. Squeers is the representative of a class, and not of an individual. Where imposture, ignorance, and brutal cupidity, are the stock in trade of a small body of men, and one is described by these characteristics, all his fellows will recognise something belonging to themselves, and each will have a misgiving that the portrait is his own. Excerpt from The Novels and Tales of Charles Dickens (Boz.), Vol. 2 of 3: Containing Sketches of Every-Day Life, Etc.; Oliver Twist, and Barnaby Budge Now, as the stern and plain truth, even in the dress of this - in novels - much exalted race, was a part of the purpose of this book, I will not, for these readers, abate one hole in the Dod r's coat, or one scrap of curl-paper in the girl's dishevelled hair. I vs no faith in the delicacy which cannot bear to look upon them. I have no de sire to make proselytes among such people. I have no respect for their opinion, good or bad; do not covet their approval; and do not write for their amusement. I venture to say this without reserve; for I am not aware of any writer in our language having a respect for himself, or held in any respect by his posterity, who ever has de scended to the taste of this fastidious class. Excerpt from The Novels and Tales of Charles Dickens, (Boz.), Vol. 1 of 3: Containing the Pickwick Papers, And, the Old Curiosity Shop It is obvious that in a work published with a view to such considerations, no artfully interwoven or ingeniously complicated plot can with reason he expected. The author ventures to express a hope that he has successfully surmounted the difficulties of his undertaking. And if it be objected to the Pickwick Papers. That they are a mere series of adventures, in which the scenes are ever changing, and the characters come and go like the men and women we encounter in the real world, he can only content himself with the reflection, that they claim to be nothing else, and that the same objection has been made to the works of some of the greatest novelists in the English language. Sketches by "Boz," Illustrative of Every-day Life and Every-day People (commonly known as Sketches by Boz) is a collection of short pieces Charles Dickens published as a book in 1836, with illustrations by George Cruikshank. The 56 sketches concern London scenes and people, and the whole work is divided into four sections: "Our Parish," "Scenes," "Characters" and "Tales." The material in the first three sections consists of non-narrative pen-portraits, but the last section comprises fictional stories. The sketches were originally published in various newspapers and other periodicals between 1833 and 1836, then issued in instalments under their current title from 1837 to 1839. The sketch "Mr Minns and his Cousin" (originally titled "A Dinner at Poplar Walk"), was the first work of fiction Dickens ever published. It appeared in The Monthly Magazine in December 1833. Although Dickens continued to place pieces in that magazine, none of them bore a signature until August 1834, when "The Boarding House" appeared under the strange pen-name "Boz." A verse in Bentley's Miscellany for March 1837 recalled the public's perplexity about this pseudonym: "Who the dickens 'Boz' could be Puzzled many a learned elf, Till time unveiled the mystery, And 'Boz' appeared as Dickens's self." Dickens took the pseudonym from a nickname he had given his younger brother Augustus, whom he called "Moses" after a character in Oliver Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield. This, "being facetiously pronounced through the nose," became "Boses," which in turn was shortened to "Boz." The name remained coupled with "inimitable" until "Boz" eventually disappeared and Dickens became known as, simply, "The Inimitable."
