SGLT2 inhibitors, also called gliflozins, are a class of medications that inhibit reabsorption of glucose in the kidney and therefore lower blood sugar. They act by inhibiting sodium-glucose transport protein 2 (SGLT2). SGLT2 inhibitors are used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. This book is a concise guide to the use of SGLT2 inhibitors for the treatment of diabetes. Beginning with an overview of the evolution and physiology of SGLT2 inhibitors, the following sections cover the renal, cardiovascular, and metabolic and haemodynamic effects of their use. Adverse effects are also examined. The book concludes with detailed discussion on SGLT2 inhibitor use as a preferred option for management of type 2 diabetes, and currently emerging data for their successful use for treatment of type 1 diabetes. Authored by recognised experts in the field, the book provides clinicians with the latest advances in the field, further enhanced by illustrations and figures to assist learning. Key points Concise guide to use of SGLT2 inhibitors for management of diabetes Covers common use for treatment of type 2 diabetes as well as increasing use for type 1 diabetes In depth discussion on associated systemic effects Highly illustrated with diagrams and figures

A history of diabetology told by renowned contributors, many have themselves already become a part of diabetes history. A must-have for every diabetologist! Diabetologists, diabetes educators, and many interested readers will appreciate this book. What is more, countless celebrations are planned for the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin: this book provides numerous illustrations, accounts of personal experiences, and critical remarks on the history of diabetology – in addition to the history of insulin. It spans an arc from antiquity to the work of Claude Bernard, Paul Langerhans, Josef von Mering, Apollinaire Bouchardat, Oskar Minkowski, E.P. Joslin, and F.M. Allen. The history of insulin is presented from the perspective of diabetologists from Scotland, Spain, Germany, and Poland. The history of oral antidiabetics is told by Harald Lebovitz, and the chapter about glitazones by Edwin Gale reads like a spy novel! Pierre Lefèbvre describes the work of the diabetologist Jean Pirart and the history of glucagon. Sir George Alberti has provided a chapter about the therapy of ketoacidosis, to which he himself made groundbreaking contributions. Nephropathy is presented by Hans-Henrik Parving, and Eva Kohner, Ronald Klein and Barbara E.K. Klein have contributed a chapter on retinopathy. Other contemporary topics such diabetes in pregnancy, diabetes technology, psychosocial aspects of diabetes, and the history of the EASD and ADA are also included in this book.

More than ten years ago, the faculty members of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine developed a review book of medical pharmacology in response to requests from our second year medical students who were preparing to sit for the Part I examination of the National Board of Medical Examiners. The students expressed a need for an organized approach to cope with the volume of basic science curricular material presented during the first two years. Therefore, our review book was not designed to provide a comprehensive text on pharmacology, but rather to provide the students with a significant core of information, as a refresher, after they had successfully completed a basic course in pharmacology. This book represents a major revision of our review of medical pharmacology. The book has been reorganized, updated and expanded to provide current information on major new drugs and information on older drug groups that typically are covered on licensure examinations. The book also has been expanded to include a large number of new questions for self-examination. The faculty have endeavored to retain a reasonably concise, relevant and readable review book that will provide the students with a thorough review of pharmacology. Students are advised to refer to comprehensive textbooks, as needed, to fill in any gaps in their knowledge which may be disclosed by the self-examinations.
