It is a truth universally assumed that a stupidly rich boy must be in want of a girlfriend. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a girl who has just travelled half a world must be in want of a bed. From her first day at pompous boarding school Netherfield, fiery Australian Lily Brewer comes up against the arrogance of Austin Cooper. Austin and his twin Jax are the hottest guys in school. And the richest. It's quick wits and sass versus suave intelligence and abs, and they refuse to fall for each other. The rest of the school ignores Austin's behaviour for his pretty face and fat wallet. But, Lily can't get past his cold character even while her insults are enough to bring a smile to Austin's usually dour face. As Lily's roommate Anne is getting closer to Jax, Austin and Lily are always at each other's throats despite the sizzling chemistry that both of them deny simmering below the surface. Between an ardent proposal from her step-mother's simpering nephew, a dashing young fellow-Aussie from the Military College, the twins' scheming bitch of a cousin, Lily's embarrassing family, Austin's intended fiancée, the antics of the twins' best friend, the overbearing Lady Celia, and a whole lot of stubbornness, love seems off the dance card for everyone. Will pride and prejudice ruin them all? Or will love win the day? Get ready to spot all your favourite characters in this Young Adult modern reimagining of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, told in dual POV. Please be aware that this story uses Australian English spelling and syntax.

In a modern reimagining of a genderbent Pride and Prejudice, Eli Bennet catches the eye of Darci Fitzwilliam, America's "Ice Princess," while attending Longbourn University. Darci, a member of a Kennedy-esque political dynasty, fights her feelings for this son of the university librarian, knowing that Eli is not from her world of sophistication and money. While Eli scorns the uptight, image-conscious Darci, he is thrown into her company as a result of the burgeoning romance between his brother, James, a teaching assistant at the college, and Darci's best friend, a wealthy Indian-American, Charlize Bingley. Studying for his Master's while dodging the attention of the ignorant, egotistical Willa Collins, and trying to keep his wild younger brother, Lyndon, in check, is a full-time job. Perhaps that's why Eli doesn't realize that Darci is falling for him. Of course, it's hard to feel flattered when she makes clear that she thinks his father is a fortune-hunter and the rest of his family is white trash. When these lovers clash, they learn to look below the surface and find that the most important lessons are those of the heart.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Wonderfully tender and hilariously funny, Eligible tackles gender, class, courtship, and family as Curtis Sittenfeld reaffirms herself as one of the most dazzling authors writing today. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR AND THE TIMES (UK) This version of the Bennet family—and Mr. Darcy—is one that you have and haven’t met before: Liz is a magazine writer in her late thirties who, like her yoga instructor older sister, Jane, lives in New York City. When their father has a health scare, they return to their childhood home in Cincinnati to help—and discover that the sprawling Tudor they grew up in is crumbling and the family is in disarray. Youngest sisters Kitty and Lydia are too busy with their CrossFit workouts and Paleo diets to get jobs. Mary, the middle sister, is earning her third online master’s degree and barely leaves her room, except for those mysterious Tuesday-night outings she won’t discuss. And Mrs. Bennet has one thing on her mind: how to marry off her daughters, especially as Jane’s fortieth birthday fast approaches. Enter Chip Bingley, a handsome new-in-town doctor who recently appeared on the juggernaut reality TV dating show Eligible. At a Fourth of July barbecue, Chip takes an immediate interest in Jane, but Chip’s friend neurosurgeon Fitzwilliam Darcy reveals himself to Liz to be much less charming. . . . And yet, first impressions can be deceiving. Praise for Eligible “Even the most ardent Austenite will soon find herself seduced.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “Blissful . . . Sittenfeld modernizes the classic in such a stylish, witty way you’d guess even Jane Austen would be pleased.”—People (book of the week) “[A] sparkling, fresh contemporary retelling.”—Entertainment Weekly “[Sittenfeld] is the ideal modern-day reinterpreter. Her special skill lies not just in her clear, clean writing, but in her general amusement about the world, her arch, pithy, dropped-mike observations about behavior, character and motivation. She can spot hypocrisy, cant, self-contradiction and absurdity ten miles away. She’s the one you want to leave the party with, so she can explain what really happened. . . . Not since Clueless, which transported Emma to Beverly Hills, has Austen been so delightedly interpreted. . . . Sittenfeld writes so well—her sentences are so good and her story so satisfying. . . . As a reader, let me just say: Three cheers for Curtis Sittenfeld and her astute, sharp and ebullient anthropological interest in the human condition.”—Sarah Lyall, The New York Times Book Review “A clever, uproarious evolution of Austen’s story.”—The Denver Post “If there exists a more perfect pairing than Curtis Sittenfeld and Jane Austen, we dare you to find it. . . . Sittenfeld makes an already irresistible story even more beguiling and charming.”—Elle “A playful, wickedly smart retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.”—BuzzFeed “Sittenfeld is an obvious choice to re-create Jane Austen’s comedy of manners. [She] is a master at dissecting social norms to reveal the truths of human nature underneath.”—The Millions “A hugely entertaining and surprisingly unpredictable book, bursting with wit and charm.”—The Irish Times “An unputdownable retelling of the beloved classic.”—PopSugar

As a time traveler, Elizabeth Bennet has traveled back and forth through time, constantly meeting and remeeting the love of her life. As she meets Fitzwilliam Darcy in a pub in the 21st century, she recalls seeing him for the first time in the 1770s. Right before the start of the Revolutionary War amid boycotts and upheavals between British colonists in America and British officers sent to repress a rebellion, they have a brief, but memorable encounter. Darcy, a loyal captain in His Majesty’s service, is sent to assist other officers in the turmoil. Elizabeth is a staunch American patriot. At their second encounter, as they attempt to deal with each other’s differences, it is undeniable that there is a gulf that might be too insurmountable to overcome. What will become of a potential star-crossed romance?

What did Mr. Darcy think when he first saw Elizabeth Bennet? How did Miss Bingley talk her brother out of proposing to Jane Bennet? And how did Lady Catherine de Bourgh find out Mr. Darcy was on the verge of proposing to Elizabeth? 22 authors of Austen-inspired fiction decided to answer these questions and more. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy have become such familiar names for so many of us that we feel as if we know them and most likely our students do, too. Teaching with literature, and especially teaching with Jane Austen's works is fun, just think of how entertaining, witty and modern her novels are. Let's get passionate about literature and explore Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in class. Pride and Prejudice is one of our latest additions to the Helbling Readers Blue Classics series, adapted by Elspeth Rawstron, and illustrated by Sara Menetti. The book was originally published in 1813, and it has lent itself to many adaptations, just think of the 1995 BBC TV series with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, and the 2005 film with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. The book has also inspired contemporary adaptations like Bridget Jones's Diary films and The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, an American web series presented in the form of vlogs. We have collected some paths into the novel which you can follow in your English lesson. We would like to approach the text through projects which focus on its themes, language, characters, locations and the film adaptations. We recommend these projects for students from the age of 13-14 until adult, with an intermediate level of English or higher.
