Neotectonics involves the study of the motions and deformations of the Earth's crust that are current or recent in geologic time. The Mediterranean region is one of the most important regions for neotectonics and related natural hazards. This volume focuses on the neotectonics of the Eastern Mediterranean region, which has experienced many major extensive earthquakes, including the devastating Izmit, Turkey earthquake on August 17, 1999. The event lasted for 37 seconds, killing around 17,000 people, injuring 44,000 people, and leaving approximately half a million people homeless. Since then, several North American, European, and Turkish research groups have studied the neotectonics and earthquake potential of the region using different geological and geophysical methods, including GPS studies, geodesy, and passive source seismology. Some results from their studies were presented in major North American and European geological meetings. The EU funded interdisciplinary Environmental Tectonics research program ENTEC has led to new insights into the strength distribution of Europe's intraplate lithosphere, and its relationship with the localization of intraplate deformation and associated vertical motions. Pronounced lateral variations in Europe's intraplate strength occur, as a result of recent thermal perturbation in the underlying mantle and inherited inhomogeneity in lithospheric structures, as a result of Europe's polyphase pre-Quaternary evolution. Results are presented from quantitative subsidence analysis studies, and constraints by geothermochronology, pointing to pronounced acceleration in differential vertical motions and associated topography development in intraplate Europe. These results demonstrate the vulnerability of Europe's lithosphere to neotectonic activity documented by detailed studies in the three natural laboratories of the ENTEC program: (1) the Lower Rhine Graben (LRG), (2) the Upper Rhine Graben (URG), and (3) the Vienna Basin (VB).

Australia's rich neotectonic record provides an opportunity to better understand the characteristics of seismogenic intraplate deformation, both at the scale of a single active fault and at the scale of the entire continent.. Herein we review this knowledge and propose six preliminary seismicity source zones (domains) based upon neotectonic data. Each source zone contains active faults that we contend share common recurrence and behavioural characteristics, in a similar way that source zones are defined using the historic record of seismicity. A seventh offshore domain is proposed based upon analogy with the eastern United States. This data, and conceptual and numerical models describing the nature of the seismicity in each source zone, has the potential to significantly enhance our understanding of seismic hazard in Australia at a time scale more representative than the snapshot provided by the historic record of seismicity. This includes providing a means by which to estimate key parameters underpinning the next generation seismic hazard maps for Australia, such as maximum magnitude earthquake and seismic source zone b values.
