ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, NPR, The Atlantic, Electric Lit, Thrillist, LitHub, Kirkus Reviews • A witty, intelligent novel of an American woman on the edge, by a brilliant new voice in fiction—“the glorious love child of Ottessa Moshfegh and Sally Rooney” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) “[A] jewel of a debut . . . abundantly satisfying.”—Jia Tolentino, The New Yorker As an adjunct professor of English in New York City with little hope of finding a permanent position, Dorothy feels “like a janitor in the temple who continued to sweep because she had nowhere else to be but who had lost her belief in the essential sanctity of the enterprise.” No one but her boyfriend knows that she’s just had a miscarriage—not her mother, her best friend, or her therapists (Dorothy has two of them). She wasn’t even sure she wanted to be a mother. So why does Dorothy feel like a failure? The Life of the Mind is a book about endings—of youth, of ambition, of possibility, but also of the meaning that an inquiring mind can find in the mess of daily experience. Mordant and remorselessly wise, this jewel of a debut cuts incisively into life as we live it, and how we think of it.

Trying to gain employment, in a society that prides itself on social equality, forces a Black Jamaican-Canadian woman to live through the racist hiring practices of Canadian governmental institutions, i.e., the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The failure of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, to uphold her Canadian Constitutional Rights, left her with the belief that the dominant group (Caucasian) is free to practice racism with impunity. In absolute despair, she embraces thoughts of death as a relief from her life. Paradoxically, the source of her desire to die is also the source of her desire to live.

A poetry collection that both illustrates what mindfulness is and encourages young, growing minds to be present, from poet and educator Georgia Heard, with art by Isabel Roxas. Poets have long observed the world in a mindful way. They point out beauty we might have missed, draw our attention to our inner thoughts, and call us to see our society in new ways. But as daily life become more and more chaotic, children grow distracted. According to the CDC, 9.4% of children have ADHD and 7% have anxiety/depression. And these numbers continue to climb. As treatment doctors recommend healthy eating, physical activity, plenty of sleep, and mindfulness techniques. Georgia Heard is a poet and educator—and she has long had her own meditation practice. In My Thoughts Are Clouds, she uses poetry to demonstrate what mindfulness is and gives kids—and their parents and teachers—accessible ways to learn mindfulness tools.

Life is short. You can, if you work hard and are lucky, get more of almost anything, but you can't get more time. Time only goes one way. The average American has a lifespan of less than 30,000 days. So how you choose to live matters. That's the topic of this book. I don't pretend to have all the answers. I'm still learning every day, and many of the good ideas here I've picked up from other people either directly or by reading. But this is what's worked for me. Like life, this book is short. Many books I read could communicate their ideas in fewer pages. So I've tried to be brief in line with the wise person who noted: "If I'd had more time I would have written a shorter letter". I don't think brevity implies lack of content. The concepts here have improved the quality of my life, and I hope they're useful to you as well. Using these concepts, I have created a life I love. My job doesn't feel like work. I love and respect the people with whom I spend time. And I'm also passionate about my life outside work. I've learned how to create a balance that makes me happy between work and other interests, including my family, friends and exercise. Sadly I think that's rare. And yet, while I know I'm lucky, most people can work towards those goals in their own lives. My interest in making the most of my life began when I was just starting college, but when I was in my mid-thirties a boss I admired died of cancer. He was young. He had a great wife; he had three young children; he had a fantastic career -- he had everything in life. He just didn't have enough time. So, while I'd often thought about how to get the most out of life, the death of someone so young and vital increased my sense of urgency to act on it. One of the things I've always wanted to do was to work for myself. As a result, I left an exciting job at Microsoft in 2001 amidst the Internet bust to found the investing firm I now run. It was hard to do, both financially and emotionally. When I left Microsoft, many people - friends, family, and even some of the press - thought I was deluding myself to start a fund focused on Internet-related companies during a market crash. A press quote from the time said: "Call him a little crazy. Call him a little nuts." I'd never seen that type of coverage before. And, in a sense, the press was right; the business wasn't easy to start. Fortunately, from a vantage point of ten years down the road, it's worked out quite well. A key part of my job is reading and thinking about a broad variety of topics. So writing this book was relatively easy. It's even easier to read. But, like many things in life, actually executing each day on these concepts is extremely difficult. With thanks to Thomas Edison, life is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Even so, I hope you have fun perspiring. Peter Atkins Seattle, WA December, 2010

These writings represent a compilation of poetry, thoughts, perspectives, ideas, and viewpoints which are based on where my consciousness was at the time of the writings, and my own limited understanding of things, my truth.I take pride in being able to give an explanation for whatever I claim to believe or understand. I do not just parrot people who are popular. My explanation does not always bring understanding to others; however, I do develop my own understanding from within. I also take pride in my ability to embrace a change in perspective on the spot if I come into a new understanding that makes more sense . . . to me. As a result, these perspectives can change at any time depending on my continued personal growth and evolution as a Divine Universal Human Becoming. Finally, I have no problem with saying "I don't know."There are a wide range of emotions represented in these writings including, anger, fear, disappointment, joy, pain, and peace. I wanted to share these writings because I think it's important for people to know we all go through many of the same experiences and emotions during our personal evolutionary process. Though some of my perspectives may be unpopular, I welcome the opportunity to answer questions about what my thought process was during the various stages of my writings. The main reason I put this book together is to add my perspective to the many perspectives already out there. I did not feel that my perspective was being heard or properly represented. I also share these writings because for most of my life I have had problems sharing my perspective about issues without people who are extremely protective of their beliefs, becoming emotional and verbally aggressive. I understand those who protect their beliefs; however, protecting beliefs and preventing others from hearing a different perspective are two different things. Those who become emotional and protective of their beliefs should just move away from the conversation, rather than turn the conversation into a toxic experience. I have also come to realize that those who are secure and comfortable with what they believe and understand have no problem with hearing other perspectives. My goal with this book is to offer my perspective. People can take it or leave it alone. I have learned personal growth can only take place within an open consciousness. If by reading this book, it opens your mind a little, I have been successful. There are also some things I have not explained or gone into detail about. This is done intentionally. For those of you who ask "What did he mean by this," I say to you "What does it mean to you?"If for some reason you take anything about this book and its contents personal, I suggest you ask yourself why, and then deal with that, rather than take the easy way out and blame me, the writer, for making you feel some kind of way.I am in the process of dealing with the thought methodology that says "You can't take anything in Life - personal . . . Life gon' do what it do', independent of how you feel about it. Either you gon' Live and Grow, or Live to Die Slow - you got two choices . . . deal wit' it, or leave it alone."When we are sharing information, we should never attack the person; however, we should feel very comfortable with challenging, questioning, and even attacking the thought, perspective, philosophy, and idea that person is presenting.Hate is an emotional poison that destroys our kidneys, cardiovascular system, and spirit. Just try living without these components. Ultimately, harboring hate is a self-inflicted punishment or a slow suicide. Let it go.Enemies are declared by people who are incapable of simply recognizing and accepting reality about a person, group of people, or situation. I don't have to declare anyone as the enemy. I just declare people as understood and act like I know.
