Excerpt from Famous Trials of the Century Law Officers are the only beneficiaries. The members of the Bar to whom once in a lifetime it chances to have to advise on questions of constitutional law are few in number, and that wide class who have read their Howells for 'example of life and instruction of manners, ' find in the New Series even more indifferent fare than is wont to be served up in sequels. Excerpt from Famous Irish Trials When I accepted the invitation to write a book on famous Irish trials 1 did not quite realize the abundance of material available. I speedily discovered that there have been famous Irish trials enough to fill, not a book merely, but a book case full: when, em harrassed by the difficulty of selection, I consulted my friends I found, like the old donkey man in the fable, contradiction and confusion amongst my advisers. Murders. Counselled one, there is nothing the public so love to read as a good, savage, sensational murder. A murder trial is always the most popular item in the newspapers, that's why detective stories are attractive, they generally begin or end with a murder. Excerpt from Classics of the Bar, Vol. 2: Stories of the World's Great Jury Trials and a Compilation of Forensic Masterpieces Many have known it not, but Jesus Of Nazareth knew. Himself rejected, he was friend to the outcast and despised. In one supreme hour of opportunity, when those who cried for human blood were shamed a divine heart felt and said, go, and sin no more. Excerpt from Classics of the Bar, Stories of the World's Great Legal, Trials and a Compilation of Forensic Masterpieces, Vol. 3 One of the most remarkable cases known to the jurisprudence of any nation was the trial of Alexander William Holmes, at the April term of the Circuit Court of the United States, held at Philadelphia, in 1842. It appeared from the evidence that Holmes was a member of the crew of the good ship, William Brown which left Liverpool, March 13, 1841, bound for Philadelphia. On Monday night, April 19th, the vessel struck an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland, and began to sink. The lifeboats were launched, but - even as it was in that later hour of human history when the ill-fated Titanic went to the bottom of the sea and broke the heart of the world - the lifeboats were few; and, although there were on board only sixtyfive passengers, thirty-one went down with the sinking ship. The others were transferred to the two small boats that were launched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Notable Trials: Romances of the Law Courts Be assured, gentle reader, that if the stories related in this volume be not interesting, it is not the fault of the stories, but only of the narrator. For there is nothing to surpass, in human interest, the records of the Law Courts. Many a writer of fiction has founded his romances on those records; and many another has spent much ingenuity in inventing plot and incident not half so weird or so striking as hundreds to be found in the pages of the "State Trials," the brief reports of the "Annual Register," or the columns of the Times. For myself, having no pretensions to write with the pen of a Scott or a Stevenson, I have been content to set out as plainly and as lucidly as I might some score of true tales. And if the reading thereof give not to you the pleasure that I hope for, at any rate I have the satisfaction of knowing that the writing of them has pleasantly beguiled more than one tedious vacation, and many a long winter night. Excerpt from Classics of the Bar, Vol. 6: Stories of the World's Great Legal Trials and a Compilation of Forensic Masterpieces In the January, 1845, issue of The Dew Drop, a temperance periodical published at Taunton, Mass., appeared an article entitled, "A Dream: was it all a dream?" which became the basis for an action for libel brought by William Wilbar against B. W. Williams, editor and publisher, and Messrs. Hack and Bradbury, printers of the paper. Wilbar was a storekeeper, selling groceries, liquors, etc. He contended that by the article he was grossly slandered, and sought damages in the sum of $30,000. The article complained of was as follows: A Dream "Was it all a dream?" As we sat in our room a few days since, thinking what more could be done to advance the cause of temperance in this community, we fell asleep and dreamed the following dream: We were in Rum Hollow, and by some irresistible impulse we were drawn into that house of human slaughter, kept by one Wilbar. Such sights as we there saw, may we never behold again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
