A measurement of the total nuclear cross section, [sigma]{sub t}, the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward nuclear elastic scattering amplitude, [rho], and the nuclear slope parameter, B, for {bar p}p elastic scattering at √{bar S} = 1.8 Te V, is presented. We find [sigma]{sub t} = 72.8 {plus minus} 3.1 mb, [rho] = 0.140 {plus minus} 0.69 and B = 16.99 {plus minus}.47 (GeV/c)−2. 5 refs., 13 figs., 2 tabs.

A measurement of the pp elastic scattering spin parameters are essential in determining the I = 1 amplitudes as well as contributing to the determination of phase shifts. The measurements of single and double-spin correlation parameters at each angle and energy will have a large impact on these programs. Furthermore, a study of the two-spin elastic scattering parameters may reveal possible new structure in the pp system. Experiment 512 has its objective to measure C/sub SS/ in the angular region 20° less than or equal to theta/sub c.m./ less than or equal to 90° and at energies of 500, 650 and 800 MeV. The EPB beam, polarized in the S direction, was incident to a target also polarized in the S direction. The scattered particles were detected in a single arm spectrometer which rotated from about 0° to 45° in the lab. A simultaneous measurement of .delta.sigma/sub T/ was made using the transmission counters from Experiment 498 downstream of the spectrometer. Results are presented. (WHK).

The processes of proton--proton scattering for various spin directions was investigated in the beam momentum range of 1 to 12 GeV/c. A striking energy dependence was observed at p/sub lab/ = 1 to 4 GeV/c, especially in .delta. sigma/sub L/, the total cross section difference in the longitudinal spin states. The rapid energy dependence has been interpreted as evidence for the formation of diproton resonances. Various pp scattering parameters were measured at 6 GeV/c, including 3-spin parameters, which are sufficient to determine pp elastic scattering amplitudes in a model independent way at 0.2

We have measured [rho], the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of {bar p}p forward elastic scattering amplitude, at √s = 1.8 TeV. Our result, [rho] = 0.140 {plus minus} 0.069, is consistent with the expected value, and thus no new physics is required. 10 refs., 2 figs.
