When the list of organic priority pollutants was first published, many mass spec troscopists went scrambling to their reference books. GC-MS was mandated for the analysis of 114 compounds, yet the spectra of many of them, if they had been recorded at all, were scattered throughout the literature. Moreover, it soon became apparent that, even if a sufficient number of instruments could be made available to undertake the task of monitoring 114 substances in the effluents of 21 categories of industry, the personnel could not be trained to perform the analyses and interpret the results. The solution to this problem has been the development of highly automated mass spectrometers which can be operated by personnel without the traditional research training. This book is for the new breed of mass spectroscopist who is not interested in the esoteric details of mass spectral fragmentation, but who merely wishes to identify specific pollutants in effluents. Our inclusion of com prehensive lists of synonyms and bibliographic data should make the book of even greater value to the reader who is not too familiar with the idiosyncrasies of chemical nomenclature and the scientific literature. The experienced mass spectroscopist should also benefit from having all of the data collected together in one volume. This is a book to be used, rather than deposited in a library distant from the laboratory: we would hope that it will fmd a place on top of every mass spectrometer used for the analysis of priority pollutants.

Announcing a new volume of Pfleger/Maurer/Weber: Mass Spectral and GC Data of Drugs, Poisons, Pesticides, Pollutants and Their Metabolites. Unmatched in scope, quality and reliability, this collection is the result of a unique effort. Part 4 of this famous reference work contains – 2000 new mass spectra (more than 6300 in Part 1–4) – data of nearly all the new drugs relevant to clinical and forensic toxicology, doping control, food chemistry, etc. – nearly complete coverage of trimethylsilylated, perfluoroacylated, perfluoroalkylated and methylated compounds – data revision of already published volumes in this second edition – updated sections on sample preparation and GC–MS methods – tables covering all the data of Parts 1–4 with directions as to page and volume on/in which the data can be found as well as the appropriate entry numbers of the electronic versions (tables listed by names and categories). The complete set of Part 1–4 now comprises more than 6300 mass spectra and reaches far beyond the needs of clinical and forensic toxicologists. The inclusion of pesticides and pollutants makes this data collection invaluable for environmental chemists, occupational toxicologists and food analysts, too. The data of the supplement volume will also be provided as an up–grade of the computer libraries (PMW—TOX3) by producers of mass spectrometers, e.g., Hewlett Packard, Finnigan (MAT, CE, Automass), Shimadzu and Varian.

The book offers a professional look on the recent achievements and emerging trends in pesticides analysis, including pesticides identification and characterization. The 20 chapters are organized in three sections. The first book section addresses issues associated with pesticides classification, pesticides properties and environmental risks, and pesticides safe management, and provides a general overview on the advanced chromatographic and sensors- and biosensors-based methods for pesticides determination. The second book section is specially devoted to the chromatographic pesticides quantification, including sample preparation. The basic principles of the modern extraction techniques, such as: accelerated solvent extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, microwave assisted extraction, solid phase extraction, solid phase microextraction, matrix solid phase dispersion extraction, cloud point extraction, and QuEChERS are comprehensively described and critically evaluated. The third book section describes some alternative analytical approaches to the conventional methods of pesticides determination. These include voltammetric techniques making use of electrochemical sensors and biosensors, and solid-phase spectrometry combined with flow-injection analysis applying flow-based optosensors.
