Manned almost entirely by reservists, the USS Abercrombie (DE343) and her sister ships did the dirty work of the Pacific War. They escorted convoys, chased submarines, picked up downed pilots, and led the landing craft to the invasion beaches, yet they received little credit and less glory. This book is a stirring tribute to their heroic efforts, written by a naval officer who served in the Abercrombie during the war and later became a best-selling author. First published in 1984, it has long been acclaimed for presenting a view of the navy as the sailors actually saw it--the joys and pains, the humor and gravity, the successes and defeats. Ed Stafford provides an authentic, day-by-day account of life on board DE343, from the Battle of Leyte Gulf and picket duty against kamikazes at Okinawa to the signing of the peace treaty in Tokyo Harbor. To create an accurate picture he consulted ship logs and after-action reports and interviewed members of the crew. Although the book focuses on events in a particular warship, it tells the story of every small ship and their valiant crews that rose to the challenge and fought with everything they had until the war was won.

To commemorate the 200 years since the exploring and naming of the Brisbane River by John Oxley in 1823, David Jones has compiled 100 maritime stories of Queensland. The book is in seven sections covering the early days, colonial era, shipwrecks, wartime and others. Australia’s First Nations people lived in and around the Brisbane River for thousands of years. Though they did not have a name for the entire river, sections of the river were called ‘Meanjin’, ‘Maiwar’ and ‘Toowong’. Other names have been lost over time. Similarly, the Brisbane River was broken up into reaches by the new arrivals. They include Hamilton Reach, Bulimba Reach, Humbug Reach, Shafston Reach, Town Reach and others. The first Europeans to discover the Brisbane River was documented by Thomas Welsby in The Discoverers of the Brisbane River, published in 1913. He states that Richard Parsons, Thomas Pamphlet and John Finnegan were the original discoverers though John Oxley gave them no credit for this. In 200 years the river has been the backbone of the city of Brisbane. Today it is used for trade, tourism, transport, pleasure and Brisbane’s water supply.

The dramatic and hilarious story of sores and survival on a human-powered journey across the ocean. It was to be an expedition like no other—a run across the Atlantic from Morocco to Barbados aboard an experimental rowboat. There would be no support vessel, no stored water, no sails, no motor. The boat's crew of sixteen included several veterans of U.S. college rowing, a number of triathletes, a woman who had rowed both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and a scrawny, bespectacled sexagenarian -- our chronicler, Charles Wilkins. When he joined the expedition, Wilkins had never swung an oar in earnest. In a tale both harrowing and hilarious, Wilkins takes the reader along for seven weeks of rationed food, festering sores, breathtaking sunrises, sleep deprivation, and mile-high waves alongside a devoted crew of misadventurers.Little Ship of Fools is a fascinating and funny story of courage, adventure and human spirit
