Excerpt from The Fight for Missouri: From the Election of Lincoln to the Death of Lyon I have written this book because it was my duty to write it because, too, I fancy that I know more about the events that are narrated in it, than does any one who will ever take-the trouble to write about them; and because I am the only living witness to many facts the remembrance of which ought to be preserved. That the reader may know whereon I ground these assertions, and that he may, before reading my testimony, be able to decide whether it be worth his attention, I will tell him frankly how I happen to know about these things. This Would have secured his election to the United States Senate, in the winte1 Of 1854, to succeed Shields, a Democrat; but four Op position members, of Democratic antecedents, 1efused to vote for Lincoln, who was yet called awhig, and by their persistence compelled the election Of Trumbull. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and His Presidency, Vol. 2 of 2 Complying with the President's wishes, Buell and Halleck opened telegraphic communication with each other, but there was no hearty accord between them. Halleck disapproved Buell's plan of advancing on Bowling Green, and could not well spare him any help from Missouri. Buell wanted gunboats and 501 diers sent up the Tennessee and the Cumberland, to attack the center of the line from Columbus to Bowling Green, on which the great power of the rebellion in the \vest was arrayed, and said whatever is done should be done speedily - within a few days. Excerpt from Lincoln: Captain Cummings' Recollections of "Honest Abe" Those were interesting days! Everybody felt as if he had a share and a responsibility in running 'our country. Slavery was a big question. People were divided on the Dred Scott decision and arguing over the Missouri Compromise. Our neighbors in the South were pressing State Rights. I wish every body today took as much interest in our country's problems as we all did then. But maybe times are different; it appears to me that the only time people concern themselves about how our country is run is along about election time, and even then they do more complaining than they do voting.
