This book begins with a lesson on the nature of botany and the process of classifying plants. It then discusses the development of plants from seeds, the reproduction processes in plants, the way plants make their food, and how plants get their water and nutrients and distribute them throughout the body of the plant. As students study these topics, they also learn about many different kinds of plants in creation and where they belong in the plant classification system. The activities and projects use easy-to-find household items and truly make the lessons come alive! They include making a "light hut" in which to grow plants, dissection of a bean seed, growing seeds in plastic bags to watch the germination process, making a leaf skeleton, observing how plants grow towards light, measuring transpiration, forcing bulbs to grow out of season, and forcing pine cones to open and close. We recommend that you spend the entire school year covering this book.

Excerpt from Lessons in Elementary Botany for Secondary Schools There are in general two ways in which the study of Botany may be approached. The first begins with the study of simpler plants, and proceeds systematically to the more complex. The second attempts, first, more familiar forms in their more striking phases, leaving more recondite problems for later inquiry and investigation. Of the two methods, the former has the advantage of being more logical; the latter is certainly more natural, and, in fact, corresponds with the manner in which all science has been developed. In the present volume the second method has been followed. This for several reasons. In the first place, it seems more convenient. The very months when the simpler phases of plant-life are at their best are, by the present arrangement of our school year, practically excluded. But the phenomena presented by the higher plants are at least equally worthy of investigation, and are, as a rule, nearly always accessible. Again, the study of the lower forms of plant-life cannot be carried far without the aid of more or less costly laboratories and appliances; and if the method adopted necessitates the study of such forms, the study of Botany will be restricted to such schools as can afford the requisite apparatus.
