The demand for the guide by specialists outside the Soil Conservation Service became so great, scs decided to publish it. The taxonomic key includes native perennial grass Species found in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Minne sota, Iowa, Missouri, and the eastern parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. To differentiate between native grass Species and some exotic Species having Similar morphological characteristics, several of the more common exotic Species are included in the key and illustrations. They are noted by exotic in parentheses. Native grasses still are found in Significant amounts in some parts of the Midwest region east of the Great Plains physiographic province though few Species are found in any given local area. They occur primarily on nonarable grassland soil, in natural savannas, in cutover forest land, marshes, and bogs, and on abandoned cropland.
