Excerpt from International Clinics, Vol. 2: A Quarterly of Clinical Lectures In order to avoid unnecessary detail I shall take up, for purposes of illustration, the caloric needs at but three ages, - four, eight, and twelve years. It is easy to determine approximately from them the needs at other ages. In round numbers, the caloric need, reckoned in calories per kilo, at these ages, is as follows. Excerpt from International Clinics, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Of; Illustrated Clinical Lectures This demonstration of the variability of these substances was made possible by the application and development of a method devised by Leishmann. The method is well described in an article by Hollister.1 In brief it is as follows. Equal quantities of a suspension of leucocytes, serum, and an emulsion of bacteria are mixed together, placed in the incubator for a short time, and then the average number of bacteria taken up by the leucocytes is determined by counting in a stained preparation made from the mixture. At the same time that a preparation is being made with the serum which is being tested, a second preparation is made under exactly the same conditions with a supposedly normal serum. The varia tion of the first serum is determined by a comparison of the results obtained in counts from the two mixtures. Excerpt from International Clinics, 1900, Vol. 2: A Quarterly of Clinical Lectures and Especially Prepared Articles The kromogram is prepared as follows: The three negatives are made with a specially constructed camera, preferably at a single exposure. The equal length Of exposure is made to depend upon the size of the diaphragm, for it requires a varying period of time to take a picture through the different screens. Thus, if it needs fifteen seconds for the red, it may require six seconds for the blue and two seconds for the green. The advantage of taking the three pictures at once IS manifest, as the object to be photographed is not so liable to change its shape, color, or form as when three exposures are taken. Neither are the changes of light apt to be so varied, and, if they occur, they will affect similarly all three of the pictures, and the color-effects will be alike in all. The positive record is next made by contact printing from the negative in the usual way. The glass plate is then cut in three and mounted on a special hinged frame. Excerpt from International Clinics, Vol. 2: A Quarterly of Illustrated Clinical Lectures and Especially Prepared Original Articles; Twenty-Fifth Series, 1915 The trend of modern medicine is to utilize every available means for clearing up the Obscure conditions which baffle the diagnostic skill of the physician. Our attention is now being directed to the examination of the cerebrospinal fluid. The value of this examina tion as a differential diagnostic agent in many Obscure neurologic and psychologic disturbances is steadily growing in importance. N 0 direct analysis can be made in nervous and mental diseases, so our efforts must be expended in searching the secretions of the body for evidences of the products which attend pathologic alterations of the nervous tissue, particularly the brain. Our first efforts re sulted in failure, because the search was made of the blood, urine, and faeces, which represent the sum total of all of the metabolic products of the body. Nervous tissue comprises only about two per cent. Of the total body, hence one can readily understand why such a small amount of products escapes detection. Examination of the cerebrospinal fluid has been more promising, and at the present time this examination is considered necessary as an aid in diagnosis in all Obscure nervous conditions. The cerebrospinal fluid comes into more intimate relation with nervous tissue than the other secretions, so should contain the products of metabolism of nervous tissue in more concentrated and in least altered form.
