Excerpt from The Hospital Bulletin of the University of Maryland, Vol. 8: March 15, 1912 Quoting from Childe again, it is unfortunate that a patient will run to a dentist with a tooth ache much more quickly than to a physician on account of symptoms pointing to a malady which, if neglected, will prove fatal. Many people will not bother with the early warning symptoms if there is no pain and no impairment in general health. The patient waits for these to come on before they admit the possibility of cancer, and, unfortunately, the physician may countenance a similar delay. While at this point it may be well to mention something of the difference in the gravity of a col lapse due to reflex inhibition of the heart by an electric current and the inhibition that results from the passage of the current directly through the heart muscle. In that due to the former re suscitation may be accomplished by prompt rhythm pressure upon the thorax over the heart, which produces artificial circulation and respira tion; in that due to the latter, however, resuscita tion is impossible.
