Excerpt from Historical Memoir of the Western Railroad The attention of the early friends of Internal Improvement in Massachusetts, was directed exclusively to the subject of Canals. Railroads were not introduced generally, even in England, as means of public travel and transportation, until a comparatively recent date. The first movement for a communication from Boston westward, was by Gen. Henry Knox, in 1791, for a Canal. He caused extensive surveys to be made in that year by John Hills, Esq., both upon a southern route through Worcester, and upon a more northern one. He and his associates were incorporated March 10 th, 1792, by the name of "The Proprietors of the Massachusetts Canal," with authority to make a Canal from Boston to the Connecticut River. It does not appear that active measures were taken under that charter. Their maps and estimates were preserved, and placed in the hands of the State Commissioners for Canal Surveys in 1825. Though charters were granted for local Canals, no general movement was attempted from Boston to the interior of the State, until 1825. At the opening of the January session of the Legislature of that year, Gov. Eustis called attention to the subject, as follows: -" A water communication from Boston, to, and through the western parts of the State, would tend greatly to advance the interests of Agriculture, and of the numerous Manufactures established in the interior. The present state of the Treasury will not, I am sensible, admit the application of funds, to any considerable amount, to objects of this nature. Excerpt from Forty Years on the Rail In preparing these pages for publication, the author has not attempted to give a complete or consecutive history of his life as conductor on the railroad during the past forty years, for that would be beyond the scope of a simple work of this kind. On a thread of autobiography he has arranged a series of sketches, drawn from his own experiences and from those of his associates in the service, dealing with all subjects from the stand point of a railroad man. Excerpt from Westward by Rail: The New Route to the East Although two series of letters, tie one entitled 'New York to San Francisco' the other 'A Visit to the Mormons' which recently appeared in The Daily News, form the basis of this volume, yet those who have perused these letters will find that the revision they have undergone is so thorough, and the additions made to them are so considerable, as to constitute the volume itself an entirely new work in substance, if not in name. Like the famous stockings of Sir John Cutler, these productions now resemble, in general outline only, that which they were originally. Seldom, indeed, should contributions to newspapers be reprinted precisely as they were when first published. A journalist must adapt himself to his readers if he would gain their confidence and produce a vivid and lasting impression. Excerpt from The Black Valley: The Railroad and the Country: With an Account of the Introduction of Water; An Allegory IN the use of the allegory there is a very striking and impressive method of presenting truth. It is attended with Obvious difficulties, and demands not a little ingenuity and taste. I think it will be felt that the author of this work has been successful in his endeavor. The fact that his book has been read, and that a new edition is needed, must stand as the best proof Of his success. This is one way of engaging the public attention on a subject of the last importance. It has the advantage of novelty. The cause is worthy Of the utmost variety Of effort; and now that the usual arguments in its support are so numerous and so frequently repeated, any new form of presentation has a special claim on the ground of a spe cial result. It must be a startling word, spoken in a start ling way, which shall gain the ear accustomed to the voice of ordinary reasoning and persuasion. In the line upon line, these pages have their place, which they easily take and easily hold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
