Co-edited by Historically Black College and University (HBCU) alumni Dr. Tia Tyree and Christopher D. Cathcart, HBCU Experience The Book celebrates the rich legacy and experiences of those who attended HBCUs. This groundbreaking anthology chronicles undergraduate realities, such as dating and relationships, dorm living, road trips, pledging fraternities and sororities, student activism and leadership; athletics and more. Further, with the debate still raging over the relevance and need for HBCUs in the new millennium, this collection of essays helps showcase the unique experiences of HBCU graduates, highlights the important need for these institutions and accentuates the overall benefits of having an HBCU education. "I love the HBCU Experience; there's nothing like it. Most of the people I hired as staff or interns through the years came from an HBCU, and the most prominent icons of the Civil Rights Movement came out of the HBCU Experience; which included stellar leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Congressman John Lewis, Ambassador Andrew Young, Stokely Carmichael, NAACP Leader Medgar Evers and Actor/Activist Ossie Davis." -Jeff Burns, Jr., Author, "The Brotherhood of Drew Hall" HBCU Experience - The Book is a fulfilling memoir. The book is a legacy to be treasured, with first-person accounts that offer readers an authentic reality as they learn or reminisce. -Jannette L. Dates, Ph.D., Dean Emerita of the Howard University School of Communications; co-editor/primary author of Split Image: African Americans in the Mass Media and co-author of The Obamas and Mass Media: Race, Gender, Religion, and Politics The HBCU culture and history is so rich that it deserves to have its stories told. As a custodian of the HBCU flame, I am thankful we have Tia and Chris to be our lions and this wonderful book to tell our tales." -Michael J. Sorrell, Esq,. President of Paul Quinn College "Capturing the true essence of the HBCU experience is nearly impossible for people who are not HBCU alumni until now. This book is a must-read for alums who want to reflect on the good old days and for high school students considering their college options." - Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., President & CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund

What would happen if people started moving beyond the conversation and took action to combat racism? We are in an era where many Americans express the sentiment, “I thought we were past that,” when a public demonstration of racism comes across their radar. Long before violence committed by police was routinely displayed on jumbotrons publicizing viral executions, the Black community has continually tasted the blood from having police boots in their mouths, ribs, and necks. The widespread circulation of racial injustices is the barefaced truth hunting us down, forcing us to confront the harsh reality—we haven’t made nearly as much racial progress as we thought. The Antiracist: How to Start the Conversation about Race and Take Action, will compel readers to focus on the degree in which they have previously, or are currently contributing to the racial inequalities in this country (knowingly or unknowingly), and ways they can become stronger in their activism. The Antiracist is an explosive indictment on injustice, highlighted by Kondwani Fidel, a rising young literary talent, who offers a glimpse into not only the survival required of one born in a city like Baltimore, but how we can move forward to tackle violent murders, police brutality, and poverty. Throughout it all, he pursued his Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts from the University of Baltimore, while being deeply immersed in his community—helping combat racism in schools by getting students to understand the importance of literacy and critical thinking. With his gift for storytelling, he measures the pulse of injustice, which is the heartbeat of this country.

This book explores the various psychosocial, sociocultural, and contextual factors that affect the sexual health of Black students who attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and how this environment can help develop strategies to improve sexual health outcomes for its students. The college environment provides young people with a new sense of independence, self-determination, and peer pressure to engage in risky sexual behaviors, and research has shown that Black students at HBCUs bear a disproportionate burden of poorer sexual health outcomes than students at predominately white institutions (PWIs). Uniquely focusing on the sexual milieu of Black students, Hall-Byers explains why a better understanding of these settings is needed to guide successful interventions that benefit and support the sexual health of Black students. Chapters compare data and research on sexual health outcomes of young Black men and women in comparison to those at predominately white institutions, as well as looking at the role of HBCU campus contexts and cultures, the potential psychosocial and sociocultural influences, what culturally responsive approaches may look like, and recommendations on how HBCU campuses can increase positive sexual health, such as through access, collaborative efforts among administrative offices, and reallocating resources. Sexual Health and Black College Students aims to advance the translation of culturally grounded research into effective practice and is essential reading for researchers and practitioners in sex therapy, public health, and social science as well as for college health staff, including nurses, student affairs, and campus wellness centers.

"Plenty of sexy chemistry and sensual sizzle in a story line that celebrates family, friends, and food." Booklist, starred review A truly unfortunate first day of work leads to unexpected love in this sparkling debut from Romance in Colour podcast cohost Tati Richardson. Rumpled and ragged was not how architect Ari James envisioned kicking off her first day at a new firm. And few things can top the horror of her new—and extremely hot—colleague walking in on her at the worst moment ever. Learning that she’ll be working with him on the project that’s supposed to get her career back on top makes it harder than ever to focus on her big comeback. With a partnership at his firm on the line, nothing is going to stand in the way of Porter Harrison absolutely killing it on his new project: not his obnoxious rival, not his unpredictable brother and definitely not his new coworker whose gorgeous curves he accidentally saw and now can’t get out of his head. Though neither of them is looking for love, once their creative juices get flowing, Ari and Porter’s connection is obvious. But when their shared goal has always been winning at work, building a solid foundation for a relationship might end up costing them everything…

In this groundbreaking book, Malcolm Frierson moves comedy from the margins to the center of the American Civil Rights Movement. Freedom in Laughter reveals how stand-up comedians Dick Gregory and Bill Cosby used their increasing mainstream success to advance political issues, albeit differently. Frierson first explores Gregory's and Cosby's adolescent experiences in St. Louis and Philadelphia and then juxtaposes the comedians' diverging humor and activism. The fiery Gregory focused on the politics of race, winning him credibility at the expense of his career in the long term, while Cosby focused on the politics of respectability, catapulting him to television and film stardom. Although militant blacks repeatedly questioned Cosby's image, Frierson suggests he and Gregory both carried the aims of the black freedom struggle. With an epilogue that considers the comedians' post–civil rights era trajectories, this book is accessibly written and filled with Gregory's and Cosby's original material, appealing to academics, history buffs, and anyone interested in American popular culture.
