Excerpt from Gleanings Old S. Paul's As the kind and indulgent readers of my little book Chapters in the History of Old S. Paul's, have been so good as to leave but few copies on the Publisher s shelves, and as that Publisher has himself asked for another and similar work, I venture hopefully to issue these Gleanings from Old S. Paul's, in bright and genial autumn weather - gleaning-time. Eight-and-twenty years have passed since, to my infinite and never-ceasing delight, I became, a Member on the foundation of this venerable Cathedral of S. Paul. Now, as then, every point in its story is full of interest for me. If the field of its grand History has been reaped already, there are abundant Gleanings to be gathered. In this series of studies we do not propose to confine ourselves to the petitionary prayers of the apostle, but rather take in a wider range. In Scripture "prayer" includes much more than making known our requests to God, and this is something which His people need reminding of, and some of them instructing in, in these days of superficiality and ignorance. The very verse that presents the privilege of spreading our needs before the Lord emphasizes this very thing: "In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God" (Phil. 4:6). Unless gratitude be expressed for mercies already received and thanks be given for granting us the continued favor of petitioning our Father, how can we expect to obtain His ear and receive answers of peace! Yet prayer, in its highest and fullest sense, rises above thanksgiving for gifts vouchsafed: the heart is drawn out in contemplating the Giver Himself so that the soul is prostrated before Him in worship and adoration.

Excerpt from The Individuality of Saint Paul In many of the translations I am deeply indebted to Dr. Moffatt's The New Testament, A New Trans lation. Where his rendering has been used verbatim, the fact has been duly pointed out. Among modern commentaries, there stands out conspicuously Dr. Denney's on Romans in The Expositor's Greek Testament. How conspicuously it does so in my own case the book itself will show, even where no open acknowledgment is made. As I claim no originality, it is super uous to mention indebtedness in other directions. In the matter of references, I have tried to keep in View, so far as possible, the reader and student of the English Bible, who seeks fearlessly to keep in touch with the modern and constructive side of the historical method. Obscurantism, and indifference to the accredited results of modern scholarship are the besetting sin of much - it may be otherwise effective - popular exegesis and evangelical appeal. To paraphrase Cromwell's words about the State, God, in seeking men to serve Him, takes no notice of their opinions; if they be willing faithfully to serve Him, that satisfies. It is, however, His will that we'serve Him with heart, soul, strength, and mind. There may be an intellectual cross also, which we are asked to carry if not our own, then that which rests on our neighbour's shoulders. The good news for the new day is the ancient novelty of a living Christ, who is competent, as ever, to be His own Interpreter and Commentator, through the Spirit that leads into all the truth. The great preacher Spurgeon said of Robert Govett: He "wrote a hundred years ahead of his time, and the day will come when his works wilt be treasured as sifted gold." Robert Govett excelled in and developed quite an understanding of the meaning behind the types and shadows of Scripture, their spiritual application, and their ultimate fulfillment. Now many of his wonderful insights have been assembled into one book.
