Fifth-century Christianity was a theological battlefield. With the Messalian heretics and their experientialist spirituality on the one side and the intellectualist school on the other, representatives of both extremes found themselves condemned by the Church. In this milieu of subjectivist notions of grace and negative anthropology, there appeared a true mystic, Diadochus, Bishop of Photike in Epiros. His is a theology whose two poles are God's grace and man's ability to cooperate with it by way of discernment of spirits. Diadochus's ability to salvage what was orthodox from the Messalians and the intellectualists proves that, rather than a reactionary, he was a true theologian capable of synthesis, open to the truth even if found in his adversary, and yet firm in his faith, unwilling to compromise. He is among the earliest witnesses of the Jesus Prayer. Diadochus is the most important spiritual writer of his century, whose influence can be found in the writings of Maximus the Confessor, Simeon the New Theologian, Gregory of Palamas, and the author of The Way of the Pilgrim. This is the first translation of his complete works in English. Cliff Ermatinger is a Chicago native and works as associate pastor of two parishes in that archdiocese. He is the author of several books on Byzantine and Carmelite spirituality as well as one on philosophy. He has written articles for Spanish, English, and German language periodicals. Along with his priestly duties, he coaches rugby, fly fishes, and competes as a bagpiper in Highland Games throughout the U.S.

Many are familiar with the Orthodox ‘Jesus prayer’, but there is much more to discover about its tradition of contemplation as a grounding both for the interior spiritual life, and for compassionate action in the world. The author, an Anglican Franciscan friar and theologian, reflects on the wealth of Orthodox spirituality through the teachings of its key figures and texts: · Evagrius of Pontus (345 – 399) One of the first Orthodox theologians and desert father. · John of Sinai (c. 579 – 649) Abbot and writer of the highly influential The Ladder of Divine Ascent. · Isaac of Syria (7th century) A much-loved hermit · Maximos the Confessor (580 – 662) A philosopher, theologian, martyr and teacher. · Symeon the New Theologian (949 – 1022) A monastic reformer, with deep mystical experiences of God’s radiant light. · Gregory Palamas (1296 – 1359) A theologian, monk, and teacher of practice of silent prayer. The aim is to enable readers to gain a sense of connection with the saints of Eastern Christianity as spiritual guides for today.

The idea for Invisible Heroes came to me after hearing an old song by Bill Anderson titled, Where Have all the Heroes Gone, and reading the words of two other songs, Footsteps of Jesus by Asa Everett and Mary Slade, and, I Want to be Just Like You by Phillips, Craig, and Dean. I realized that too many of us pay a type of homage to people who have gifts, talents, or abilities that have brought them fame and fortune without paying attention to whether those people have used God's gifts to honor Him, or if they are simply interested in self. The purpose of the book is to encourage each of us to evaluate our own lives to determine if we are emulating Christ-like values or if we are also more concerned with self.

"The sheer number of miraculous interventions recounted in this book may tempt readers to assume that Mr. Rich Coyle made up these stories to bring glory to himself as a paragon of virtue and faith. Having known Mr. Coyle for more than twenty years, I can personally vouch for his honesty, integrity and genuine humility. I have no problem at all believing the miracles recounted in this volume for I know the faith of the man who experienced them and I know the power of Jesus Christ whom he serves. I do not believe it is possible to read this book without being inspired to grow in faith and believe God to manifest His supernatural power in our lives. Mr. Coyle has received from the mighty hand of God so many times because he simply believes God's word is true. His faith is perhaps best summed up in this single verse of scripture: 'Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today and forever' (Hebrews 13:8)." -Dr. Thomas J. Kindell, ThD, PhD, founder and president of Reasons for Faith Ministries, Inc. "This is put together so well, it's like someone else did it!" -Sue Coyle, wife of the author

Ostensibly a biography of the gaucho barbarian Juan Facundo Quiroga, Facundo is also a complex, passionate work of history, sociology, and political commentary, and Latin America's most important essay of the nineteenth century. It is a study of the Argentine character, a prescription for the modernization of Latin America, and a protest against the tyranny of the government of Juan Manuel de Rosas (1835–1852). The book brings nineteenth-century Latin American history to life even as it raises questions still being debated today—questions regarding the "civilized" city versus the "barbaric" countryside, the treatment of indigenous and African populations, and the classically liberal plan of modernization. Facundo’s celebrated and frequently anthologized portraits of Quiroga and other colorful characters give readers an exhilarating sense of Argentine culture in the making.
