Excerpt from Federal-State Cooperative Snow Surveys and Water Supply Forecasts for Nevada: March 8, 1957 Recently completed snow surveys in Elko County indicate an improve ment in the Snake and Owyhee watersheds over last month. Snow surveys indicate the water stored as snow in the Snake River and Owyhee River drainages to be 70 percent and 65 percent, respectively, of the March 1 15 year 1938-52 average. The Humboldt River drainage is about 55 percent of the 15 year March 1 average. The Santa Rosa Mountains north of Paradise valley measured about 65 percent of the March 1 average. Snow surveys in the Charleston Mountains near Las Vegas indicated about 55 percent of average. White Pine County snow courses measured 52 percent of the March 1 average. Upper Reese River snow courses averaged only about 15 percent of average. The truckee-tahoe basin snow courses measured at about 75 percent of the March 1 1938-52 15 year average. Carson Pass snow course measured 82 percent and the walker Rivers averaged about 80 percent. In all cases, the snow surveyors reported the ground wet beneath the snowpack. To have normal runoff this summer, heavy snow must be deposited in the mountain watersheds during the month of March. Storage in all northern and western reservoirs, except Rye Patch on the Humboldt River, is above their 15 year average. During the month of February, Rye Patch storage increased about 5000 acre feet to a March 1 capacity of acre feet. As measured by the U. S. Geological Survey, runoff on the Humboldt River at Palisade and west Walker River near Coleville, California was considerably above average.
