The [Delta](1232) resonance dominates pion-nucleon scattering at energies below 300 MeV, the region in which pion-nucleus scattering has been well studied using spectrometers at the meson factories. Above this energy region little pion-nucleus scattering data exists. Recently, spectrometers at Brookhaven, LAMPF, KEK, and DUBNA have been used to obtain initial data for pion-nucleus scattering in this energy region. In this talk we review some data that have been obtained using the LAS spectrometer at LAMPF.

Data are presented on pion-nucleus double-charge-exchange scattering at energies between 300 and 500 MeV, the highest energies measured so far, together with a review of results at lower energies. The small-angle excitation functions disagree with predictions based on a six-quark cluster model and on an optical model consistent with single-charge-exchange scattering at these energies, but they are consistent with a distorted-wave calculation. Data on f--2-shell nuclei are in partial agreement with a two-amplitude model which is successful at lower energies. In order to achieve good understanding of this process at these energies, more work, both experimental and theoretical, is needed. 16 refs., 6 figs.

One of the most fundamental problems in elementary particle physics is the study of the interaction of the pion meson with nucleons. It is believed that the pion meson plays a fundamental role in the description of nuclear forces and it is important, therefore, to understand the interaction of these particles. The primary method of gaining information on this interaction is through scattering experiments, and this book is concerned primarily with studies of pion-nucleon scattering at high energies. Originally published in 1969. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Several experiments have measured nominally-charge-symmetric scattering of pions from tritium ([sup 3]H) and [sup 3]He. These experiments have covered incident pion energies from 142 MeV to 295 MeV and scattering angles up to 110[degrees] in the laboratory. The results have been used to study charge-symmetry breaking and nuclear scattering systematics. In the work I have extended these measurements to angles near 180[degrees] for pion energies of 142 MeV, 180 MeV, 220 MeV, and 256 MeV, which bracket the [Delta][sub 33] pion-nucleon resonance. This is the most extensive set of [pi]T and [pi][sup 3]He data in this kinematical region. It will allow tests of scattering theory of pion-nucleus interactions and charge-symmetry breaking in back-angle scattering, and, within the limits of these two theories, it may help improve our understanding of the structure of these nuclei.

Results of Gluaber model calculations of elastic, inelastic, single- and double-charge exchange reactions from light nuclei of pions having energy of 300 to 1200 MeV are presented. Experimental [pi]N phase shifts including l=0 through 5 were used in the calculation. 25 refs., 6 figs.
