Excerpt from Ethical Addresses and Ethical Record, 1909 The ethics of gambling may appear to some to be merely an elementary consideration, to which they are willing to give attention only by courtesy. I have not, however, found it so. There are some lessons which the wisest of us need to learn, and which may be gained from a discussion of this subject. In the endeavor to think out the subject, in order to present it to you, I have learned some lessons, -my attitude being as always, not that of one who teaches, but rather of one who seeks to get more deeply into the subject under consideration, and to learn. Excerpt from Ethical Addresses and Ethical Record, Vol. 14: June, 1907 TO begin with, then, let me state my objection to the immediate introduction of an elaborate course of ethics into the public schools, even granted that such a course has been carefully planned in detail for the help of teach ers. As one of the speakers at the first convention of the Religious Education Association said in 1903: Moral or ethical knowledge no more comes naturally of itself to the teacher than to any one else; and especially if it is to be presented to others must it be learned in some orderly and systematic way. The possession of personal morality no more qualifies for teaching morality, than does the fact that I personally (as far as anybody knows) possess a perfect outfit of bones, muscles, arteries, veins, lungs, etc., qualify me to be demonstrator in anatomy in a university medical school. Moreover, the sort of teaching that is based on syllabi or textbooks in the teacher's hands can not be effective. To be effective, the lessons must be the outcome of the teacher's own experiences of life. There fore we must try to get the teacher to follow a course of reasoning and self-searching and observation that will bring him to the conviction of the truth and the import ance of the lessons he is to impart. Any less personal preparation will result in flat lessons, that will in the long296 moral instruction IN the public schools. Excerpt from Ethical Addresses and Ethical Record In May, 1876, the year when our National Centennial was being celebrated, what is distinctively known as the Ethical Culture Movement began. In the single span of a generation it has developed into a world-wide movement, not through any forced propaganda efforts, but solely by an inward necessity and a natural and healthy process of growth. When we organized our Ethical Society here in Philadelphia, twenty years ago, there existed only the original Society for Ethical Culture in New York, and its first offspring in Chicago. For seven years previous to the organization of the Chicago Society the parent society, through its leader, has been proclaiming a message which, like a seed, was sown broadcast by the winds of the spirit, and took root, first in Chicago, Philadelphia, and St. Louis, and afterwards in London, Berlin, Vienna, and Tokio; and in other cities of other lands.
