Would you experience your city differently if your doorstep were a trailhead? Many people don't have close-by, safe places to walk, despite walking's known benefits. In Beyond Greenways: The Next Step for City Trails and Walking Routes, greenways expert Robert Searns introduces a new generation of more accessible pathways that stitch together urban and suburban areas. Searns introduces two models--grand loop trails and town walks. Grand loop trails are 20 to 350-mile systems that encircle metro areas. Town walks are shorter--2 to 6-mile routes in cities. He then lays out how to plan, design, and build support for them, drawing inspiration from trails in the US and abroad. Planners, trail advocates, and community leaders will find the tools here to develop successful and affordable trails. Now is the time to pursue accessible pedestrian routes for this, and future, generations.

Increasing equestrian use on recreational trails puts intense pressure on the environment. Horse traffic produces high stresses that can cause trail degradation such as erosion and muddiness. Much is known about causes of erosion, but there are limited solutions and guidance available for equestrian trails. This study takes the knowledge from current engineering practice to evaluate their effectiveness in preventing trail degradation on horse trails. Guidance for the design and construction of horse trails is to be created from the observations and lessons learned. Test segments were constructed to evaluate trail layout and surface stabilization techniques. Trail surfaces tested include natural soil, gravel, gravel with geosynthetic reinforcement, and lime stabilization. Observations were taken over a one year period. The research findings indicate that natural surface trails are not adequate in resisting intense disturbance caused by horse use. Gravel surfaces increase erosion resistance and surface strength, but are more effective when included with geotextile reinforcement. Lime stabilization was not effective as a trail surface due to exposure to freezing and thawing.

The Yearbook of Transnational History is dedicated to disseminating pioneering research in the field of transnational history. This third volume is dedicated to the transnational turn in urban history. It brings together articles that investigate the transnational and transatlantic exchanges of ideas and concepts for urban planning, architecture, and technology that served to modernize cities across East and Central Europe and the United States. This collection includes studies about regionals fairs as centers of knowledge transfer in Eastern Europe, about the transfer of city planning among developing urban centers within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, about the introduction of the Bauhaus into American society, and about the movement for constructing paved roads to connect cities on a global scale. The volume concludes with a historiographical article that discusses the potential of the transnational perspective to urban history. The articles in this volume highlight the movement of ideas and practices across various cultures and societies and explore the relations, connections, and spaces created by these movements. The articles show that modern cities across the European continent and North America emerged from intensive exchanges of ideas for almost every aspect of modern urban life.
