This book delves into the early days of electrical appliance development when many novel and little known appliances were made. The manufacture and operation of some of these inventions encountered seemingly insurmountable problems at the time - the first toaster, for example, would often shoot the toast high into the air, and the toast was occasionally on fire - but many are now revived in some of the latest appliances we use today. This is an ideal one-stop informative book which looks at every aspect of early electrical appliances, from the Harness electropathic corset and head-ache curing electric hairbrush of the Victorian fashion world to the tea parties at which guests watched vacuum-cleaning displays.

A PRACTICAL GUIDE that shows maintenance and construction electricians how to successfully repair commercial and industrial electrical equipment Troubleshooting and Repairing Commercial Electrical Equipment is the first work that offers a practical approach to diagnosing and repairing commercial/industrial electrical equipment – covering everything from motors, computers, elevators, and fire alarm systems to heavy-duty ovens and audio equipment. If you are a licensed construction or maintenance electrician who repairs malfunctioning industrial electrical equipment, this one-of-a-kind guide can help you become more competent in your profession. Inside you'll find ways to become faster, more efficient, and able to achieve a much higher success rate in restoring large electrical equipment without damaging it, introducing an additional defect, or creating a hazard. This invaluable resource also includes information for those seeking licensing and certification, as well as different measures that should be taken to ensure that a UL or other agency listing is not voided. Presents a new system of diagnostics based on the difficulty of each procedure and the probability of its success Emphasizes a practical approach to ensure that equipment is fixed properly Uses a blend of basic electrical theory and sophisticated mathematical equations that both experienced technicians and apprentices can learn from Includes separate chapters on elevators, fire alarm systems, motors, largescale stereo equipment, and industrial appliances Discusses related licensing and certification as they pertain to troubleshooting and repair Written by a Master Electrician with more than 35 years of experience

There is widespread interest throughout the world in improving appliance energy efficiency. Methods to reach that end include energy labeling, energy efficiency standards and market conditioning (e.g, energy efficient procurement and DSM programs). Energy efficiency standards, which started out as an action to reduce demand for energy in individual countries, has now become a subject of regional and even worldwide dimension, particularly in the context of global climate change mitigation. Mandatory energy efficiency standards are in place for some appliances in China, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines and the United States. Standards for refrigerator/freezers will take effect in Australia and the European Union in 1999. Voluntary energy efficiency standards are in place for refrigerators in Brazil, India and Korea and for air conditioners in India, Japan and Korea. Table I showed potential global energy use reductions from codes and standards in buildings. If individual country data can be assembled, a more accurate approach to estimating potential reductions in energy use and carbon emissions would be to perform a bottom-up analysis for energy using equipment on an end-use basis in as many large developing countries as possible. The impact of standards would be assessed as more efficient appliances replaced existing stock models and new purchases that increased saturation rates were made at higher efficiencies than would otherwise be the case. This approach would show the slow but steady buildup of annual energy savings from efficiency standards or other programs to improve energy efficiency.

The transformative effect of technological change on households and culture, seen from a macroeconomic perspective through simple economic models. In Evolving Households, Jeremy Greenwood argues that technological progress has had as significant an effect on households as it had on industry. Taking a macroeconomic perspective, Greenwood develops simple economic models to study such phenomena as the rise in married female labor force participation, changes in fertility rates, the decline in marriage, and increased longevity. These trends represent a dramatic transformation in everyday life, and they were made possible by advancements in technology. Greenwood also addresses how technological progress can cause social change. Greenwood shows, for example, how electricity and labor-saving appliances freed women from full-time household drudgery and enabled them to enter the labor market. He explains that fertility dropped when higher wages increased the opportunity cost of having children; he attributes the post–World War II baby boom to a combination of labor-saving household technology and advances in obstetrics and pediatrics. Marriage rates declined when single households became more economically feasible; people could be more discriminating in their choice of a mate. Technological progress also affects social and cultural norms. Innovation in contraception ushered in a sexual revolution. Labor-saving technological progress at home, together with mechanization in industry that led to an increase in the value of brain relative to brawn for jobs, fostered the advancement of women's rights in the workplace. Finally, Greenwood attributes increased longevity to advances in medical technology and rising living standards, and he examines healthcare spending, the development of new drugs, and the growing portion of life now spent in retirement.

This book covers the state of the art of energy efficiency in household appliances and lighting which can be used now and in the near future to achieve significant and cost-effective energy savings. Recent developments in advanced appliance and lighting technologies by some of the largest manufacturers are also presented. Although energy-efficient household appliances and lighting technologies can save a huge amount of electricity, they still have not been widely adopted. The barriers which can hinder the adoption of those technologies are presented. Policies and programmes to promote the large-scale penetration of energy-efficient technologies and the market transformation are featured in the book, describing the experiences gained in different parts of the world. This extensive coverage includes contributions from relevant institutions in the European Union, North America, Latin America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
