The first edition of this book on diagnosis and control of diseases in North American marine aquaculture was published in 1977, with the promise that the material would be updated frequently, in view of the rapid expansion of marine aquaculture and the importance of disease control to successful production. Now, ten years later, the promised update has finally been prepared, incorporating new information that has been published in the intervening time. The concept and format of the book remain the same - to present information on disease diagnosis and control in a concise standard format, emphasising those diseases which affect survival of cultured populations. Because of the amount of new material, many new sections have been added, and some of the previous sections have been rewritten entirely or almost so. This is particularly true of the section on penaeid shrimp, which now contains current descriptions of 28 diseases. As with the original edition, many disease specialists have contributed individually authored sections in their areas of expertise. The editors have authored some of the major sections and have added introductory material, but the work represents a genuine group effort. The volume will be essential reading for all those involved in the diagnosis and control of disease in aquacultured species throughout the world, and indeed for aquaculturists in general.

There has been a continual expansion in aquaculture, such that total production is fast approaching that of wild-caught fisheries. Yet the expansion is marred by continued problems of disease. New pathogens emerge, and others become associated with new conditions. Some of these pathogens become well established, and develop into major killers of aquatic species. Diagnosis and Control of Diseases of Fish and Shellfish focuses on the diagnosis and control of diseases of fish and shellfish, notably those affecting aquaculture. Divided into 12 chapters, the book discusses the range of bacterial, viral and parasitic pathogens, their trends, emerging problems, and the relative significance to aquaculture. Developments in diagnostics and disease management, including the widespread use of serological and molecular methods, are presented. Application/dose and mode of action of prebiotics, probiotics and medicinal plant products used to control disease are examined, as well as the management and hygiene precautions that can be taken to prevent/control the spread of disease. This book will be a valuable resource for researchers, students, diagnosticians, veterinarians, fish pathologists and microbiologists concerned with the management of diseases of fish and shellfish.

The Second Edition of the CRC Handbook of Mariculture provides an extensive comparison of marine shrimp culture techniques from around the world. This extensively revised and updated Second Edition focuses on growout systems that have contributed to the production success of shrimp farms and systems worldwide. Topics covered include methods for the culture and preparation of algae, rotifers, Artemia, and other foodstuffs for use in crustacean farms; recent developments on enriching larval food organisms to improve crustacean diets; conditioning and spawning penaeid shrimp; obtaining and manipulating shrimp eggs and sperm for controlled reproduction and use of intensive nursery raceways for juvenile shrimp production; and discussions of many types of marine shrimp growout systems. In addition, culture systems used in Hawaii, Ecuador, Taiwan, and Japan are described in detail. Significant new information from Japan on hormonal control of penaeid shrimp maturation and spawning is discussed. Marine shrimp and Macrobrachium shrimp diseases by the foremost authorities in the area are presented with detailed photographs and illustrations to help identify diseases. The book also includes an update on American lobster larval and juvenile culture.
