In Celia Graves's world, vampires roam the alleys of Tinseltown, street corner psychics have real powers, and cops use memory enhancement spells. But Celia thought she was an ordinary human, albeit one with a clairvoyant best friend and a ghostly little sister. The vampire attack that made Celia an Abomination forces her to take food in liquid form and gives a whole new meaning to the word "sunburn." She's slowly adjusting (therapy sessions and all) when she discovers that the attack awakened a hidden part of her heritage: Celia is part Siren, able to enthrall men—and enrage women. Her best friend's murder is unsolved; the cops think Celia should be in jail or staked; and her old lover, mage Bruno DeLuca, has something important to tell her. To top it all off, Celia's been summoned to the Sirens' island. Celia Graves has more than one enemy. Some of them want her blood. Some of them want her soul. All of them want her dead. The Byzantine Empire is a time and place of enlightenment and diversity, but also zealous piety. Young Adila hungers for this wealth of culture, but as a girl, she’s barred from partaking in the richness of society. Her abusive father’s solution is to force her to be his longed-for son, Adilsen. He moves their family from Finland to an abbey village in Russia. Outwardly, Adilsen goes along with her father’s disguise. It allows her to enter the all-male religious order, where she discovers her love of music, knowledge and God. But Adila lives with the constant threat of her secret being exposed. Adila flourishes in the choir, and the Bishop of Constantinople selects her to travel to the capitol. But he doesn’t choose her for her singing The Bishop wants Adilsen as a pawn in his treasonous scheme, entangling her in political corruption at the highest levels of the empire. At the Byzantine monastery in Constantinople, Adilsen must deceive everyone to conceal her true gender. But then she falls in love with Majidi, a visiting dignitary from the far south of the realm. When she shocks the Bishop with a dramatic miscarriage, he banishes her to Majidi’s harem in Trebizond. Enslaved in the citadel, she must now fight the harem hierarchy to escape rape, abuse and death. As a boy, Adila’s resourcefulness and strength were lauded, but as a concubine, she is a dangerous threat to tradition. SIRENS’ SONG is an epic historical fiction adventure of Adila growing into a forceful, intelligent, independent woman in a time when these qualities in a female could get her killed. Through music, spirituality and the challenges of loving a man of a different race and religion, Adila learns from those on the fringes of society how to battle through layers of convention, and claim power in her femininity.

After her attempt to return to her own timeline failed, Max set out with Chloe and Rachel to follow their friends, the band The High Seas, on their cross-country tour to a festival in Florida. Also traveling across the country are Rachel’s fellow cast members in Hamlet – also bound for Florida. When they bumped into Max, Chloe and Rachel on the Grand Canyon trail, they took a Team Hamlet photo, but Laurence fell off the cliff! In one timeline, Max used her power to save him, in the other Chloe and the High Seas found him alone on the edge – the rest of the cast having gone for help. After bringing Lawrence back to the motel, Chloe confronted Tristan, who had travelled across timelines to find her. Tristan told Chloe everything, and the pair began planning how to bring Max home. After a long day, Max was kept awake, wondering if she was on the right path. Chloe apologized to Max for pulling her back out of the transect, because she wasn’t ready to lose her. Max told that it was okay: if there’s one thing she can trust in any timeline, it’s Chloe Price.

The cross-fertilization of languages, cultures, and literary forms that produced modern Japanese literature also gave birth to a new literary archetype: the "Westernesque femme fatale," an alluring figure who is ethnically Japanese but evokes the West in her physical appearance, lifestyle, behavior, and use of language. Tracing the genesis of this archetype from her first appearance in the vernacularist fiction of the late 1880s to her role in Naturalist fiction of the mid-1900s and her embodiment by the modern Japanese actress in the early 1910s, Sirens of the Western Shore identifies the Westernesque femme fatale as the hallmark of an intertextual exoticism that prizes the strange beauty of modern Western writing. By illuminating the exoticist impulses that informed this archetype, Indra Levy offers a new understanding of the relationships between vernacular style and translation, originality and imitation, and writing and performance.

Heralded as “one of his generation’s most original and exhilarating writers” by The New York Times, Gary Shteyngart has fused his literary chops and biting humor into one-of-a-kind fiction that provokes, inspires, and entertains—sometimes all at once. Throughout the two bestselling novels in this eBook bundle, Absurdistan and Super Sad True Love Story, Shteyngart is at the height of his powers: “wildly funny” (San Francisco Chronicle), “freakishly intelligent” (Elle), “ridiculously witty and painfully prescient” (Time). Don’t miss Gary Shteyngart’s highly anticipated memoir, Little Failure, an American immigrant story of a lifelong misfit who finally finds his place in the world, told with the author’s sharp powers of observation, self-deprecating humor, surprising revelations, and moving insights into the human heart. ABSURDISTAN “Exuberant, wise, hilarious . . . a long, funny, heartbreaking lament for home, whatever that means, and wherever that might be.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review Meet Misha Vainberg, son of the 1,238th-richest man in Russia and a 325-pound patriot of no country save New York City. Misha just wants to live in the South Bronx with his hot Latina girlfriend, but after his gangster father murders an Oklahoma businessman, all hopes of a U.S. visa are lost. Salvation lies in tiny, oil-rich Absurdistan, where a crooked consular officer will sell Misha a Belgian passport. Then civil war breaks out, a local warlord installs Misha as minister of multicultural affairs, and our hero finds himself fighting for his life, falling in love, and trying to figure out if a normal life is still possible in the twenty-first century. SUPER SAD TRUE LOVE STORY “Wonderful . . . [combines] the tenderness of the Chekhovian tradition with the hormonal high jinks of a Judd Apatow movie.”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times In the near future, America is crushed by a financial crisis, and our patient Chinese creditors may just be ready to foreclose on the whole mess. Then Lenny Abramov, son of a Russian immigrant janitor and ardent fan of “printed, bound media artifacts” (aka books), meets Eunice Park, an impossibly cute and impossibly cruel Korean American woman with a major in Images and a minor in Assertiveness. Could falling in love redeem a planet falling apart? All Lenny has to do is convince his fickle new love that there is still value in being a real human being. Praise for Gary Shteyngart “Compared with most young novelists his age . . . Shteyngart is a giant mounted on horseback. He ranges more widely, sees more sweepingly and gets where he’s going with far more aplomb.”—The New York Times Book Review “Obscenely gifted . . . [His] prose never fails to pop, and nothing escapes his satiric eye.”—Entertainment Weekly “The Joseph Heller of the information age.”—Salon “His imagination is either warped or prophetic; you choose. But his writing is brilliant.”—The Seattle Times “Not since mid-seventies Woody Allen has anyone cracked so wise and so well.”—Esquire “There is no one better at skewering social systems.”—The Wall Street Journal

The United Nations Security Council, in 2000, unanimously passed a resolution calling for women’s increased participation in conflict prevention and peacebuilding, as well as their protection during conflict. This marked the first time that the UN Security Council explicitly addressed gender issues in ‘conflict’ and ‘post-conflict’ situations. But what difference has this international agenda on ‘Women, Peace and Security’ made to women’s lives on the ground and to the governance of international peace and security? This volume provides a critical evaluation of the mainstreaming of gender issues in matters of international peace and security resulting from the passage of Resolution 1325 in 2000. It considers how this agenda actually plays out in different contexts, and with what implications for women’s activism and for peace and security. The picture that emerges is not uniform, obliging us to reconsider the links between gender, conflict, different visions of peace and, consequently, different projects of peacebuilding. Consequently, the book poses new questions for transnational feminist scholars and activists. This book was based on a special issue of the International Feminist Journal of Politics.
