"Cuban Communism remains, like its previous ten editions, an important contribution to the field of Cuban Studies. It includes many useful chronological facts, as well as a selection of Fidel Castro's speeches which are interesting and informative for any reader interested in the island." -- Maria Gropas, Department of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge This new 11th edition of a classic text, come to be known as "the bible of Cuban Studies," emphasizes two key issues of the twenty-first century. First, transition concerns in a world without Castro, and second, the continuing embargo of Cuba by the United States in the aftermath of a major change in the presidency. Cuban Communism has been updated to take account of changes in the 44 years of Castro's rule since seizing power in 1959. In addition to articles and essays that represent new developments in Cuba, the work boasts a database upgrade that makes it more important to students, scholars, and researchers. The volume has expanded the section on future prospects for civil society and democracy in a post-Castro environment; including "Regime Change in Cuba" by Eusebio Mujal-Leon and Joshua W. Busby; "Transition Scenarios" by Randolph H. Pherson, and "A Policy Conundrum over Cuba" by Edward Gonzalez. It also contains a chronology of events from 1959 through 2002. Finally, the new work contains a carefully constructed Who's Who of important players in Cuba and the regime during the Castro period up to the present. Other articles new to the 11th edition of Cuban Communism are by Ernesto Betancourt, "Cuba's Balance of Payment Gap"; Carmelo Mesa-Lago, "The Cuban Economy From 1999-2001"; Taylor Boas, "The Internet and U.S. Policy toward Cuba"; Aldo M. Leiva, "Environmental Technology Transfer and Foreign Investment"; Moises Asis, "Judaism in Cuba"; Wolf Grabendorff, "A View from the European Union." More than ever, it is a must volume for those interested in political systems and social structures. Irving Louis Horowitz is Hannah Arendt Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Political Science at Rutgers University. Among his works are Three Worlds of Development, Beyond Empire and Revolution, and his Bacardi Lectures on Cuba that was published as The Conscience of Worms and the Cowardice of Lions. Jaime Suchlicki is Bacardi Professor of History at the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Miami, and executive director of its Cuban-American and Cuban Center. The Cuban Revolution of 1959 was a benchmark of triumph and a harbinger of tragedy to come. Rather than herald a new era of Cuba joining the world community of nations as a paragon of democracy as many fervently hoped and believed it would, it became instead a new stage in authoritarian rule in the Western hemisphere. For more than a half century since then Cuba has been defined by the capacity of a single family to command and determine the fate of a nation and to do so with a minimum of opposition. Incredibly, even those professing adhesion to democratic norms have been ready to forgive the dictator his excesses. This volume explains the theory and practice of this absence of internal opposition and the persistence of external support for the Castro family and its entourage. The Long Night of Dark Intent is chronological in order, with the author indicating major points in each of the five decades covered. The volume covers five centers of system analysis: economics, politics, society, military, and ideology. Who or what "determines" events and decisions is the stuff of real history. It is precisely due to variability in causal chains in society that we have huge variance in levels of predictability. The course of the Cuban Revolution gives strong support for such an approach to the Castro Era. This is a unique, unflinching account with a strong emphasis on the importance of U.S. policy decisions over time.

Cuba is a relatively small country, but with the foreign policy of a major league international player. It has carried out such a policy since the start of Castro's 1959 revolution. Because of its close alliance with the Soviet Union, by the early to mid 1960's it had the external resources, internal conditions, and lack of significant US opposition to begin to visibly impact conditions throughout the world; from Latin America, to Africa and Asia. At times, the close relationship to the USSR (and corresponding partnership with Communist Bloc countries) made many perceive its autonomy in foreign affairs as close to zero. Viewed from the perspective of analysts in the American Department of State, it is easy to see Castro's Cuba as an unofficial province of the Soviet Union. In this book, Dr. Céspedes sees a Cuban foreign policy that has been both aggressive ideologically, militaristic, yet highly pragmatic. The Castro brothers saturated the media with altruistic images of themselves in a campaign to justify and encourage, or directly spread, radical change. A totalitarian state was created where Fidel Castro could claim "unanimous support" for revolutions which could defy the United States and its allies. Participation in the state-orchestrated exportation of Marxism quickly became a requirement for existence in a Cuba that prohibited all forms of dissent. Devoted leftists who aided Castro's rise, but later resisted disastrous economic policies and challenged the one-party state, found themselves silenced, imprisoned, or executed. Using previously unexplored sources, Dr. Céspedes constructs a compelling and detailed exposé which focuses on Cuban political subversion throughout the world, either through direct military intervention, or disguised as development aid for health, economic, and civic programs. This is a must read for history students and those wishing to study for the IB Americas Paper 3 Exam written by a prominent historian, IB examiner and content contributor, Dr. Juan R. Céspedes.
