In this volume experts answer questions which are frequently asked about theproperties and handling of X-ray contrast media, providing a good source of reference in the use of these agents and which should help to reduce the rate of adverrse effects. In addition, basic information is provided on the development, toxicology, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and clinical testing of X-ray contrast media. Finally, a look at the prospects for contrast media in magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound underlines the increasing importance of these diagnostic imaging procedures. This book will be of interest to physicians and their staff alike.

This is the third edition of a very successful book that originally emerged from the work of a committee set up by the European Society of Urogenital Radiology in 1994 to consider the safety of contrast media used for diagnostic imaging. The new edition not only fully updates the previous edition, but also includes new chapters on complex topics such as pediatric issues and practical aspects of off-label contrast media use. Comprehensive consideration is given to the many different safety issues relating to iodine-based contrast media, gadolinium-based contrast media, microbubbles for ultrasound, and barium sulfate. The text includes chapters on both acute and delayed non-renal adverse reactions and on renal adverse reactions. All of the questions frequently raised in radiological practice are addressed. This book, presented in a handy, easy-to-use format, provides an invaluable, unique, and unparalleled source of information.

This book is the first to cover the field of contrast media from basic sciences through to clinical practice. Textbook of Contrast Media provides the first exhaustive account of the use of contrast media in clinical practice. Edited by distinguished figures in the field, the book is divided into five main sections: history and background, X-ray contrast agents, MR contrast agents, ultrasound contrast agents, and future developments. Each chapter is fully referenced and benefits from the exensive use of high quality radiographs and illustrations.

Journalists, always very direct and in search of sensation, essentially asked me two questions on the occasion of this workshop: What were the goals of the meeting? With the improvement of diagnosis through the development of image techniques, didn't the contrast media already have their future behind them? Many answers were provided during the course of the workshop, and in order to best answer the journalists I proposed the following synopsis. 1. Since the 1979 Colorado Springs workshop organized by E. Lasser, progress has been so rapid and the newly available works so numerous that another meeting on an international level for the purpose of pre senting and discussing these advances appeared indispensable. Why not then in Europe and why not in Lyon? To expand on this progress, by 1981 the new contrast media with less-hyperosmolar molecules, still in the trial stage in 1979, were al most all available commercially for angiography, albeit at prohibitive prices. The advantages of these various media are becoming better known; moreover, in the wake of Lasser's work, our understanding of the pathophysiology of their noxious effects is also advancing rapidly owing to the use of models (for the target organs: heart, vessel wall, nervous system, kidney; and for the more general reactions: blood cells, coagulation, complement system, circulating enzymatic systems). In addition, further new molecules are currently being studied in re search laboratories. 2.

A different approach to contrast media, discussed primarily from the point of view of the radiologist. Comprehensive sections are devoted to iodinated contrast media and to the contrast media employed in magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography. The latest agents available receive due attention, as do adverse reactions. A final section considers the use of contrast media in nuclear medicine.

The book Theory and Practice of Contrast completes, corrects and integrates the foundations of science and humanities, which include: theory of art, philosophy (aesthetics, epistemology, ontology, axiology), cognitive science, theory of information, theory of complexity and physics. Through the integration of these distant disciplines, many unresolved issues in contemporary science have been clarified or better understood, among others: defining impact (contrast) and using this definition in different fields of knowledge; understanding what beauty/art is and what our aesthetic preferences depend on; deeper understanding of what complexity and information are in essence, and providing their general definitions. Complexity means integration, value and goodness - concepts that seem to be neglected today. The book also has a high degree of integration/complexity, although each chapter introduces a new issue. The last chapter: "Binary Model of the Universe" draws attention to the need for including in physics the analysis of our mind and the resulting new possibilities, which include the mentioned (digital) model of the universe. Despite the difficult issues raised here, this study is written in accessible language and may be interesting not only for scientists and academics.
