'Historical memory is an unwelcome guest at the banquet of belief, even in secular societies', wrote Trojanow and Hoskote midway through this book on the myopic certitudes that have fed into mainstream understandings of Western and Indian civilisations. In their defamiliarising story, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism no longer remain stand-alone edifices guarded by their (religious and scholarly) yakshas and guardian angels. Instead they come into their own through a criss-crossing of cultural products, ideas, icons, philosophies, spiritualities, effecting smoe of the greatest confluences that humanity has known. An elegant corrective to lazy generalities of 'globalisation', 'Hindutva' 'Islamism' and 'clash of civilisations'. A brilliant story of 'Connected Histories'.

On the Crem home world the high council was in session. The Earth Project Leader reported that phase one is complete and successful. The satellite sent to depopulate the Earth has effectively completed its mission and the planet is now virtually devoid of human inhabitants. The council enquired as to the fate of phase two, the pilot plot at the so called farm house. The Project Leader was momentarily diffident then continued in a confident manner, admitting that contact was lost with the pilot plot and has not as yet been reestablished. However, reports up to the moment that communication was lost indicated that plants had been rooted and were thriving. The Project Leader advised the council that phase three, the activation of three selected Earth confluence locations, 38N 86W, 38N 87W and 38N 88W, was proceeding as planned. In anticipation of successful startups at those locations construction of the processing plant at nearby 39N 86W was also being initiated. For this an Engineer was being dispatched to direct the activities of humanoid worker drones that will be transported to the location. Security will be provided by canine drones under the Engineers supervision. At the moment, the Crem known to Alex and Mattie as the voices were themselves in conference. "It is advisable that we maintain a low profile for the time being," stated Speaker 1. "The Earth Project Leader has terminated some of our allies on the home world. That resource will be difficult to replace." Speaker two: "Are we in this listening post in danger as well?" "Not at the present time," replied Speaker 1. "I have it on good authority that the Project Leader, while still suspicious of the events at the farm house, is confident that internal opposition to the project has been expunged. Prudence dictates that for the time being we not engage in any activity to suggest otherwise. Let us not give the Project Leader any reason to believe that the opposition is still viable." "So the fledgling and her progenitor are on their own?" asked Speaker 3. "For the time being yes, but remember we have sent them a resource," said Speaker 1. NASA discovered the alien ship lurking in the asteroid belt in the 1960s. They kept the Target under intense surveillance for decades, letting the public believe they were exploring the solar system, while they worked feverishly to refine the technology needed to reach it. The ship itself remained silent, drifting. Dr. Jane Holloway is content documenting nearly-extinct languages and had never contemplated becoming an astronaut. But when NASA recruits her to join a team of military scientists for an expedition to the Target, it's an adventure she can't refuse. The ship isn't vacant, as they presumed. A disembodied voice rumbles inside Jane's head, "You are home." Jane fights the growing doubts of her colleagues as she attempts to decipher what the alien wants from her. As the derelict ship devolves into chaos and the crew gets cut off from their escape route, Jane must decide if she can trust the alien's help to survive.

The popularity of such widely known works as "The Lottery" and The Haunting of Hill House has tended to obscure the extent of Shirley Jackson's literary output, which includes six novels, a prodigious number of short stories, and two volumes of domestic sketches. Organized around the themes of influence and intertextuality, this collection places Jackson firmly within the literary cohort of the 1950s. The contributors investigate the work that informed her own fiction and discuss how Jackson inspired writers of literature and film. The collection begins with essays that tease out what Jackson's writing owes to the weird tale, detective fiction, the supernatural tradition, and folklore, among other influences. The focus then shifts to Jackson's place in American literature and the impact of her work on women's writing, campus literature, and the graphic novelist Alison Bechdel. The final two essays examine adaptations of The Haunting of Hill House and Jackson's influence on contemporary American horror cinema. Taken together, the essays offer convincing evidence that half a century following her death, readers and writers alike are still finding value in Jackson’s words.
