The beneficial impact of the European communities involvement in scientific research and technology is wide-ranging and pervasive. There are high hopes of major advances in scientific knowledge and technological processes, while the emergence of a genuine tradition of collaborative research holds out great and continuing promise for the future. Close, frequent and long-term cooperation between universities, research centres and industry is already generating new synergies, forging a truly European scientific community. Many of tomorrows industrial developments, destined to be determinant for our economic success and prosperity, will spring from this research. The Concerted European Action on Magnets - CEAM - project is a prime example of collaborative research and development. Financed from the Communities STIMULATION action and implemented with the help of EURAM, the advanced materials programme, CEAM will bestow great benefits on European industrial competitiveness, providing a channel for high quality basic research to find its way into commercial products. This remarkable cooperative enterprise brought t~gether 58 laboratories and more than 120 scientists and englneers in a sustained thirty month effort. It spanned every aspect of new iron-based high performance magnets from theoretical modelling of their intrinsic magnetic properties to the design and construction of novel electrical devices and machines. Besides adding a new European dimension to advanced magnetic technology, CEAM also ensured that a whole new generation of young researchers and technicians have been trained in applied magnetism.

For more than a quarter of a century Robert Cahn has been writing articles for Nature and other esteemed journals. Written in the author's distinctive style, Artifice and Artefacts: 100 Essays in Materials Science presents a compilation of 100 articles and reviews chosen to represent a broad range of subjects that map the growth of materials science during this period. The book provides an informative and entertaining record of scientific development. Topics range from the fractal analysis of fracture surfaces on flint to the scientific detection of frauds in the labeling of wine. The articles themselves have largely been reproduced as they first appeared, promoting insight into the ideas prevalent at the time. This unique collection appeals to physical and materials scientists as well as chemists, geologists, and biologists.

Handbook of Magnetic Materials, Volume 28, covers the expansion of magnetism over the past few decades and its applications in research, notably the magnetism of several classes of novel materials that share the presence of magnetic moments with truly ferromagnetic materials. The book is an ideal reference for scientists active in magnetism research, providing readers with novel trends and achievements in magnetism. Each article contains an extensive description given in graphical, as well as tabular form, with much emphasis placed on the discussion of the experimental material within the framework of physics, chemistry and materials science. Comprises topical review articles written by leading authorities Includes a variety of self-contained introductions to a given area in the field of magnetism without requiring recourse to the published literature Introduces given topics in the field of magnetism Describes novel trends and achievements in magnetism

The book you are now holding represents the final step in a long process for the editors and organizers of the Advanced Study Institute on hard magnetic materials. The editors interest in hard magnetic materials began in 1985 with an attempt to better understand the moments associated with the different iron sites in Nd Fe B. These 14 moments can be obtained from neutron diffraction studies, but we qUickly realized that iron-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy should lead to a better determination of these moments. However, it was also realized that the complex Mossbauer spectra obtained for these hard magnetic materials could not be easily understood without a broad knowledge of their various structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Hence it seemed useful to the editors to bring together scientists and engineers to discuss, in a tutorial setting, the various properties of these and future hard magnetic materials. We believe the inclusion of engineers as well as scientists in these discussions was essential because the design of new magnetic materials depends very much upon the mode in which they are used in practical devices.

This video describes the research project 'Concerted European Action on Magnets' (CEAM) supported by the Stimulation and EURAM Programmes of Directorate-General XII - Science, Research and Development. An important element in CEAM is the interdisciplinary, pan-European collaboration within the project (58 participating institutes). At the centre of the film there is a panel discussion between the four main coordinators of the project interspersed with practical examples of applications in industrial machines and devices (trains, aeroplanes, motors, static devices).

This book is based on the contributions to a course, entitled Applied Magnetism, which was the 25th Course of the International School of Materials Science and Technology. The Course was held as a NATO Advanced Study Institute at the Ettore Majorana Centre in Erice, Sicily, Italy between the 1st and 12th July 1992, and attracted almost 70 participants from 15 different countries. The book deals with the theory, experiments and applications of the main topical areas of applied magnetism. These selected areas include the physics of magnetic recording, magnetic and magneto-optic recording devices, systems and media, magnetic fine particles, magnetic separation, domains and domain walls in soft magnetic materials, permanent magnets, magnetoresistance, thin film magneto-optics, and finally, microwave, optical and computational magnetics. The material is organised into I 0 self-contained chapters which together provide a comprehensive coverage of the subject of applied magnetism. The aim is to emphasise the connection between the fundamental theoretical concepts, key experiments and the important technological developments which have been achieved in this field up to the present time. Moreover, when and where possible, pointers to future trends are indicated which hopefully, together with the background material, will promote further advancement of research. The organizing committee would like to acknowledge the sponsorship of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, the National Science Foundation of the USA, the Science and Engineering Research Council of the UK, the Italian Ministry of Education, the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific Research and the Sicilian Regional Government.
