The maintenance and restoration of masonry structures are often repetitive processes. Many of the problems encountered are very common. Many problems requiring maintenance and repair could have been mitigated or prevented with a little foresight and coordination during the design and construction period. Why is so much effort expended on "repairing the repairs"? This paper discusses how common mistakes occur and why. Many of the perceived restraints on the design and construction phases such as time, budget, level of craftsmanship, and material costs do and should affect the project. However, these constraints must be balanced against the functionality of the masonry, such as durability, structural stability, weather barrier, and aesthetics. Through real-life examples, this paper describes a simple repair of rehabilitation process that will lead to a successful project outcome: Long lasting, low maintenance masonry structures. It takes into account the owner's needs, priorities, and budgetary, physical, and time constraints before any design development or repair begins. For comparison, unsuccessful project outcomes from actual projects will also be explored.

In a presentation that formalizes what makes up decision based design, Decision Based Design defines the major concepts that go into product realization. It presents all major concepts in design decision making in an integrated way and covers the fundamentals of decision analysis in engineering design. It also trains engineers to understand the impacts of design decision. The author teaches concepts in demand modeling and customer preference modeling and provides examples. This book teaches most fundamental concepts encountered in engineering design like: concept generation, multiattribute decision analysis, reliability engineering, design optimization, simulation, and demand modeling. The book provides the tools engineering practitioners and researchers need to first understand that engineering design is best viewed as a sequence of decisions made by the stakeholders involved and then apply the decision based design concepts in practice. It teaches fundamental concepts encountered in engineering design, such as concept generation, multiattribute decision analysis, reliability engineering, design optimization, simulation, and demand modeling. This book helps students and practitioners understand that there is a rigorous way to analyze engineering decisions taking into consideration all the potential technical and business impacts of their decisions. It can be used in its entirety to teach a course in decision based design, while selected chapters can also be used to cover courses in subdisciplines that make up decision based design.

Following the two damaging California earthquakes in1989 (Loma Prieta) and 1994 (Northridge), many concrete wall and masonry wall buildings were repaired using federal disaster assistance funding. The repairs were based on inconsistent criteria, giving rise to controversy regarding criteria for the repair of cracked concrete and masonry wall buildings. To help resolve this controversy, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) initiated a project on evaluation and repair of earthquake-damaged concrete and masonry wall buildings in 1996. The ATC-43 project addresses the investigation and evaluation of earthquake damage and discusses policy issues related to the repair and upgrade of earthquake-damaged buildings. The project deals with buildings whose primary lateral-force-resisting systems consist of concrete or masonry bearing walls with flexible or rigid diaphragms, or whose vertical-load-bearing systems consist of concrete or steel frames with concrete or masonry infill panels. The intended audience is design engineers, building owners, building regulatory officials, and government agencies. The project results are reported in three documents. TheFEMA306report, Evaluation of Earthquake Damaged Concrete and Masonry Wall Buildings, Basic Procedures Manual, provides guidance on evaluating damage and analyzing future performance. Included in the document are component damage classification guides, and test and inspection guides. FEMA 307, Evaluation of Earthquake Damaged Concrete and Masonry Wall Buildings, Technical Resources, contains supplemental information including results from a theoretical analysis of the effects of prior damage on single-degree-of-freedom mathematical models, additional background information on the component guides, and an example of the application of the basic procedures. FEMA 308, The Repair of Earthquake Damaged Concrete and Masonry Wall Buildings ,discusses the policy issues pertaining to the repair of earthquake-damaged buildings and illustrates how the procedures developed for the project can be used to provide a technically sound basis for policy decisions. It also provides guidance for the repair of damaged components.

"The information can be used to improve new and old installations so that masonry attains its top performance, both structurally and aesthetically. Whether used as veneer, as a structural system, or as both, masonry has served people well for a long time. Yet materials and systems are continuously evolving. Through testing, research programs, and forensic evaluations, it's possible to analyze what works well, where improvements can be made, and what techniques can make masonry systems more robust so that they are better able to perform their intended function. Since moisture plays a key role, keeping water out of the structure is a top priority--whether for interior comfort, to keep occupants dry; for structural durability, to reduce the opportunity for rust and degradation; or for aesthetics, to minimize potential for efflorescence and otherwise maintain a pleasing appearance. Testing and research are critical tools to study physical performance of masonry assemblies, including various aspects of strength and durability. And ultimately, it's important to use common sense in the way we design, build, and repair masonry construction."--Publisher's website.

Concrete Solutions contains the contributions from some 30 countries to Concrete Solutions, the 6th International Conference on Concrete Repair (Thessaloniki, Greece, 20-23 June 2016). Strengthening and retrofitting are major themes in this volume, with NDT and electrochemical repair following closely, discussing the latest advances and technologies in concrete repair. The book brings together some interesting and challenging theoretical approaches and questions if we really understand and approach such topics as corrosion monitoring correctly. Concrete Solutions is an essential reference work for those working in the concrete repair field, from engineers to architects and from students to clients. The Concrete Solutions Series of international conferences on concrete repair began in 2003 with a conference held in St. Malo, France in association with INSA Rennes. Subsequent conferences have seen the Series partnering with the University of Padua (Italy) in 2009, with TU Dresden (Germany) in 2011 and with Queen’s University Belfast (Northern Ireland) in 2014. In 2016 Thessaloniki (Greece) hosted the conference, partnering with both Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH). The next conference in the series will be held in 2019 in Istanbul.
