A methodology to identify various types of risks associated with the implementation and use of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems is presented. It is based on a conventional Failure Mode and Effects Analysis methodology, which has been extended so as to assess risks due to drivers' errors (driver behaviour) and due to legal and organizational problems. For each type of system, the relevant failures are identified and the following indicators are rated by experts: severity, occurrence probability, detectability and recoverability. For each identified type of failure, the failure effect, cause, detection and recognition, and mitigation strategies are also defined.

The European research project DESERVE (DEvelopment platform for Safe and Efficient dRiVE, 2012-2015) had the aim of designing and developing a platform tool to cope with the continuously increasing complexity and the simultaneous need to reduce cost for future embedded Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). For this purpose, the DESERVE platform profits from cross-domain software reuse, standardization of automotive software component interfaces, and easy but safety-compliant integration of heterogeneous modules. This enables the development of a new generation of ADAS applications, which challengingly combine different functions, sensors, actuators, hardware platforms, and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). This book presents the different results of the DESERVE project concerning the ADAS development platform, test case functions, and validation and evaluation of different approaches. The reader is invited to substantiate the content of this book with the deliverables published during the DESERVE project. Technical topics discussed in this book include:Modern ADAS development platforms;Design space exploration;Driving modelling;Video-based and Radar-based ADAS functions;HMI for ADAS;Vehicle-hardware-in-the-loop validation systems

In order to build a sustainable transport system for people and goods that meets the needs of all users, a truly integrated and seamless approach is needed, and the full potential of transformative technologies has to be exploited. This can only be achieved if user-centeredness, cross-modality and technology transfer become the paradigm of shaping future transport. Mobility4EU is a project funded by the European Commission that focusses on these topics and is working on delivering an action plan towards a user-centric and cross-modal European transport system in 2030. The authors of this contributed volume are dedicated scholars and practitioners connected to Mobility4EU either as partners or external contributors. Their contributions focus on understanding user needs and report on technologies and approaches that support the tailoring of a user-centered cross-modal transport system for passengers and freight on long distances and in the urban context.

Current accident statistics show that intersections are still a hotspot for vehicle crashes. Thus, many vehicle manufacturers and research institutes have identified the need for driver assistance at intersections. Unfortunately, intersections are one of the most complex of all traffic-related scenarios, which complicates the development of comprehensive assistance systems in this area. This thesis presents the development of an Intersection Safety System with special focus on situation analysis and adaptive risk assessment algorithms which are suitable for online implementation in a vehicle. The demonstrator system developed is able to monitor the intersection environment with several on-board sensors and build an appropriate environmental model including behaviors, intentions and interrelations of all traffic participants in the scene. An adaptive risk assessment judges the possible risk for the current driving task and presents the result to the driver through innovative warning strategies. Functional and user acceptance tests show that the system developed is capable of properly assisting the driver with intersection driving maneuvers and is also well accepted by drivers using the system. At the time of completion of this thesis, the underlying prototype demonstrator vehicle was the first on-board Intersection Safety System demonstrator dealing with these most critical intersection scenarios.Bernd Rössler studied applied computer science in the natural sciences from 1996 to 2001 at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. From 2003 to 2007 he worked at the Group Research Electronics department of Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg, where the work described in this thesis originated. From 2007 to 2009 he worked as project leader at Ibeo Automobile Sensor GmbH in several national and international research projects in the field of Driver Assistance Systems. Since 2010 he has been working in the research department of SICK AG in Hamburg and acts as coordinator of the EC-funded project INTERSAFE-2 on the topic of Cooperative Intersection Safety Systems.
