A detailed picture is presented of the physical and chemical phenomena that affect the behavior of cobalt-base superalloys. Solid-solution strengthening is obtained from the high-melting metallic elements molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum, and columbium. These elements also participate in precipitation reactions involving their carbides. Precipitation of intermetallic compounds such as Ni3Ti is an important process in cobalt alloys containing appreciable amounts of nickel and titanium. The relationships among microstructure, heat treatment, and mechanical properties of the important commercial alloys are considered, and whenever possible, explained on the basis of the physical and chem cal processes that occur. This report presents information dealing with the oxidation of nickel- and cobalt-base superalloys. All of the superalloys will oxidize at high temperatures when oxygen is present in the enveloping atmosphere. The rate of oxidation depends upon alloy composition, temperature, oxygen concentration, oxides formed, diffusion rates of the metals in both base metal and oxide, diffusion rate of oxygen in the oxide, solubility of oxygen in the matrix, and a host of other variables. The effects of oxidation can be beneficial or they can be harmful. The first section of this report deals with the fundamentals of the oxidation of Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys. Subsequent sections discuss general surface oxidation, intergranular oxidation, other subsurface oxidation, and the effect of stress on the rate of oxidation. Numerous specific alloys are mentioned in the report; as an aid to the reader, the appendix contains an alloy index of the alloys mentioned in the report along with the compositions of the alloys, and the pages on which mention of the alloys is made.

"This practical guide provides an introduction for understanding the compositional complexity of superalloys superalloy and the wide range of alloys developed for specific applications. The basics of alloying, strengthening mechanisms, and structure of superalloys are explained in optimizing particular mechanical properties, oxidation/corrosion resistance, and manufacturing characteristics such as castability, forgeability, and weldability."--Publisher's description.

A comparison study is made, for the spectrochemical analysis of cobalt-base superalloys, between the liquid-layer solid-sample spark technique and the conventional point-to-plane spark analysis in air. The changes of analytical concentration curves are indicated for alloying constituents of two developmental cobalt-base alloys, and correlation of the changes to preliminary microscopic, metallographic, and spectroscopic phenomena are hypothesized.

A superalloy, or high-performance alloy, is an alloy that exhibits excellent mechanical strength at high temperatures. Superalloy development has been driven primarily by the aerospace and power industries. This compilation of papers from the Twelfth International Symposium on Superalloys, held from September 9-13, 2012, offers the most recent technical information on this class of materials.
