This book unites an interdisciplinary body of experts in child development whose research and ideas challenge existing theories and conventional clinical practice in a variety of domains of early child development. This unique volume fills a gap in existing developmental research and offers applications for clinical practice to professionals, students, and researchers in developmental, social, and educational psychology.
The Latin American Economic Outlook 2019: Development in Transition (LEO 2019) presents a fresh analytical approach in the region. It assesses four development traps relating to productivity, social vulnerability, institutions and the environment.
Challenging the Aid Paradigm critically examines central aspects of Western international aid policy, while at the same time exploring non-western, especially Chinese, aid and assesses to what extent these may be competitive or complementary.
Three billion people live in rural areas in developing countries. Conditions for them are worse than for their urban counterparts when measured by almost any development indicator, from extreme poverty, to child mortality and access to electricity and sanitation.
An encyclopedic examination of competing paradigms in the areas of instructional design and development at all levels and in a variety of environments. The 46 treatments feature the analysis of experienced scholars and sometimes the authors of the particular theories under discussion which include topics in instructional development in its philosophical mode (constructivism, postmodernism, systems approach), as a cultural vantage point, and in theory and application reviewing the effects of technology on class design, the influences of semiotics, the strategic advantages of constructivist instruction versus linear designs, and modeling for applying design strategies from constructivism and cognitive theory to individualizing instruction with adult learners. Hazel Henderson provides a survival guide for our ride on the "tiger of change," offering new directions and expanded contexts for creating patterns of operation based on win-win models and a new planetary culture. She provides numerous examples of the new paradigm and outlines concrete steps toward it, including the use of renewable resources and chaos systems theory, the greening of social policy, and the pursuit of sustainable, gender-balanced development.

Advances in cancer research have led to an improved understanding of the molecular mechanisms underpinning the development of cancer and how the immune system responds to cancer. This influx of research has led to an increasing number and variety of therapies in the drug development pipeline, including targeted therapies and associated biomarker tests that can select which patients are most likely to respond, and immunotherapies that harness the body's immune system to destroy cancer cells. Compared with standard chemotherapies, these new cancer therapies may demonstrate evidence of benefit and clearer distinctions between efficacy and toxicity at an earlier stage of development. However, there is a concern that the traditional processes for cancer drug development, evaluation, and regulatory approval could impede or delay the use of these promising cancer treatments in clinical practice. This has led to a number of effortsâ€"by patient advocates, the pharmaceutical industry, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)â€"to accelerate the review of promising new cancer therapies, especially for cancers that currently lack effective treatments. However, generating the necessary data to confirm safety and efficacy during expedited drug development programs can present a unique set of challenges and opportunities. To explore this new landscape in cancer drug development, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine developed a workshop held in December 2016. This workshop convened cancer researchers, patient advocates, and representatives from industry, academia, and government to discuss challenges with traditional approaches to drug development, opportunities to improve the efficiency of drug development, and strategies to enhance the information available about a cancer therapy throughout its life cycle in order to improve its use in clinical practice. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
This book argues that the current state of China requires an important paradigm shift in the way the party-state manages the country's development, and goes on to assess the fitness of the party-state for implementing such a paradigm shift and the likelihood of the party-state bringing this about. It brings together an examination of the very latest situation in a range of key areas where current developments have the potential to undermine substantially the status quo, areas such as the recent economic crisis and the resulting economic slowdown, increasing labour unrest, mounting calls for social justice, worsening urban-rural disparity, the urgent need to implement social welfare programmes, the rise of civil society, and the impact of new media. Overall, the book provides a thorough appraisal of the difficulties which China currently faces.
