Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ...State population ten years of age and over, unable to speak English. This number also comprises 47.8 per cent of the entire number of persons of this age in the State unable to speak the English language. This element classified as to sex constitutes 11,495 males and 15,438 females, the excess of females in the non-English speaking class showing in the incorporated cities as well as in the State. DEFECTIVE CLASS. The classification of the defective persons of the State, is a difficult matter, and altogether satisfactory results are not possible, owing to the difficulties inherent in census work. From these tabulations we find the defectives of Michigan comprise 11,7(50 persons, 6,202 males and 5,558 females. These figures as compared with the State census of 1894, show an increase of 715, or 6.5 per cent, in the defective class of the population during the past ten years. TABLE LIX.--Number and per cent of defective class in the State, classified by general nativity. In considering the general nativity of the defective persons, we find 7,011, or 67.3 per cent, are of native birth, and 3,849, or 32.7 per cent, are foreign, the...
