Excerpt from Catalogue of the Eighteenth Public Auction Sale of a Splendid Collection of American and English Coins, the Property of Peter Gschwend, Esq. Of Pittsburg, Penna Early Connecticut coins of the mintage of 1787 are repro sented by two varieties of the excessively rare Granby three pence, issued by John Higley, at Granby. What could be more original than their curious command, Value me as you please? The noted Virginia shilling, with the bust of George III and probably the third known specimen, is a fine proof piece, and Mr. Gschwend regards it the prize of his collection. Vermont, New Jersey, Louisiana, Florida and Kentucky are all represented in this collection by choice ex amples. The New York series is especially fine, and is headed by both varieties of the great rarity, the Liber Natus Liber tatem Defendo Cent, struck in 1787. All collectors are familiar with the astounding records recently made for these pieces. The Non Vi Virtute Vici with the alleged bust of Washington is a very choice specimen, about uncirculated, and of great rarity. A French colony, located on the Black River, near Carthage, New York, in 1796, is represented by the beautiful Duvivier Castorland half dollar, struck in gold. The Washington series of coins and medals is extensive and contains some great rarities, the most notable being the two Half dollars, one in silver, the other in copper. These bear a bust of Washington. The copper piece, differing from the silver specimen in having an ornamented edge, is almost unique, and may be regarded infinitely more valuable than the one in silver. Crosby knew of but one specimen, that in Fon robert's collection in Europe. Only four or five of the 1792 Washington cents in this collection are known.
