The existing pattern of social stratification in the Kashmir has under gone certain degree of qualitative as well as quantitative change mainly due to the impact of process of modernization, secularization, spread of education and new found economic prosperity. The Kashmiri society is the Muslim dominated society & the religion, which the vast majority follows, is Islam. Islam has no place for caste distinctions, but the Muslim population has remained divided into caste & Sub-caste from ancient times. It is mainly because the Kashmiri Muslims have retained some Pre-Islamic socio cultural features despite the conversion.
