This heavily revised second edition comprehensively reviews the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in cardiovascular practice. It provides detailed guidance on how to properly interpret OCT images and successfully utilise it in daily clinical practice Chapters cover the development and physics associated with OCT, relevant interpretation skills, OCT imaging artifacts, plaque erosion, bioabsorbable stent, the detection of vulnerable plaque, and the use of OCT imaging in unison with other modalities such as phase contrast imaging (PCI). Areas of potential future development are also covered Cardiovascular OCT Imaging enables interventional cardiologists and cardiologists to quickly become both familiar and develop a detailed understanding of this technology to improve patient care and treatment outcome. It is a valuable reference for all practising and trainee medical professionals in cardiology, and in particular those who specialize in interventional cardiology.

Given that for centuries, the standard tool to understand diseases in tissues was the microscope and that its major limitation was that only excised tissue could be used, recent technology now permits the examination of diseased tissue in vivo. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has promising potential when applied to coronary artery disease. OCT h

OCT is rapidly being adopted in cardiology practice. However, gap exists between the speed of technology development and the knowledge of cardiologists. Many cardiologists are not familiar with image interpretation and don’t have enough background/knowledge to use the information in clinical practice. This book will be designed for busy interventional cardiologists to become quickly familiar with this emerging technology so that they can take advantage of its power improve patient care and outcome.

Need to know about Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): A Novel, Promising Imaging Modality, for examining Coronary arteries having 10-fold higher resolution than IVUS. In cardiology, OCT is an optical analog of for IVUS examination is replaced intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), used to examine the coronary arteries. Ultrasound employed by near-infrared light with a wavelength of about 1,300 nm, which is absorbed by red blood cells, water, lipids, and protein at relatively low levels. Through a rotating glass fiber-optic system, coherent infrared light can be directed and reflected within the tissue to create a detailed tissue image with extraordinarily high resolution, and IVUS-like cross-sectional tomographic images can be obtained. OCT and IVUS differ in several respects. The resolution of OCT (to 10-20 µm) is about 10-fold higher than that of IVUS (to 100-150 µm), but the maximum depth of tissue penetration is lower with OCT (1-2 mm) than with IVUS (4-8 mm). Another important difference is related to the strong attenuation of light by blood, which originates from two sources: absorption by: · haemoglobin and · scattering by red blood cells. To examine coronary arteries, blood must first be removed during an OCT examination to eliminate massive scattering of light by red blood cells. Thus, an attempt has been made to discuss the role of OTC in Cardiology along with several relevant Tables and Illustrations for better understanding! …Dr. H. K. Saboowala. This atlas is a practical and fully illustrated guide to the use of intravascular OCT in diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease. It consists of two parts. The first part of the book provides a systematic introduction to coronary imaging with OCT. It describes how to interpret images and describes abnormal findings seen in atherosclerosis, complications after intervention, and stent assessment. The second part of the book presents real-life case studies that show how OCT is used in clinical practice in Mount Sinai to assess the disease, select appropriate treatment, and evaluate complications and results. Each case includes a brief clinical history, procedure summary, angiography and OCT images, including video material, and a discussion of how OCT affected the clinical decision-making process.
