The figures for this year I have taken from one of my Suffolk Green Books, viz. Suffolk in 1524. Therein I have printed from the contemporary document in the P. R. O. The names of all those who were Charged to a subsidy that year in the whole of Suffolk. As they were included who had nothing but their wages on which to be Charged, so the return must include nearly every householder and a few others besides. If we multiply the number by four to bring in the. Women and children it will give a total population of about 2612. A.d. 1603. The figures for this year I have taken from the Proceedings of the Suffolk Arch. Inst., XI, 45. Therein are printed from a MS in the British Museum the answers made by the Suffolk Clergy in 1603 to certain questions put to them by the Bishop; Two of those questions were, How many Communicants in your parish, and, How many recusants? Communicants and recusants would include between them the whole adult population and rather more, all who were about 15 years and upwards. In which case we have to add to these figures about the same proportionate number as to the figures of 1377 and 1381. That would give St Mary's parish 1180 persons, St James 932. Total 2112.
